ok guys, what mod would u recomend i save up for next?
Dump pipe and cat

anti lift kit, bushes, braces and sway bars (suspension bar springs and shocks)
i think i should do the Dump pipe and cat, but i wana do other things. You know the feeling :P

No point doing the FMIC if you still have a restriction in the exhaust Jake.
I know its not glamourous but the dump pipe would give you better driveability around town.
If not, do the suspension mods which will make it a quicker point to point car on the next cruise.

Of all the mods I've done.. I found the FMIC to be the best.. and most noticable.. however the order I've done them in would probably make it so.
I did.. air filter with removal of all ghey subaru resontators and snorkels and quietening devices.. took it all out and replaced all plastic piping with mild steel..
Then.
Replacement of ghey coil packs with bosch aftermarket HEC716's
Then..
T piece bleed to 16psi...
Then..
3" tuffy dump, high flow cat and Apexi N1 rear muffler..
Then...
FMIC
All other mods made minimal difference.. then the front mount went on.. it was like BAM! loving it :)

oh yeah, ive already got a 3" mandrel bent exhaust from cat back with res and a Apexi N1 muffler. K&N pod filter, removed all resenators and put in a very short steel pipe in (damn air con makes it hard to make room for the filter).
I also want to boost it, but i think ill wait for the ecu ;)

The dump pipe will make a big difference over the stockie piece of shit item.. :)
Air con ? don't you mean ABS ? cos the air con is nowhere near that :)
The 90 degree hose that comes off the turbo now faces directly towards the cold air duct and my pod filter sits right on that... my next step is to get a mushroom hks filter.. and mount it actually in the quarter panel... nice and stealthy.. and will be even louder..

yeah, i meant ABS....whoops
Ok, i think the dump and cat is the way to go. From memory i was quoted about $800 for the lot fitted. That sound about right?
Karupt, how much did it cost to get the piping done for the filter? or did ya do it ur self? mount the filter in the guard? is that legal? would be cool tho, leave lots of room in the bay.
got any pics of ur bay dude?
Karupt

I will get some pics of it tonight...
I got the dimensions and went to an exhaust shop to get the pipe made up.. now all my other piping is polished aluminium.. am gonna redo that in alum too..
As for the pod filter in the guard... I doubt it would be legal.. however.. neither are most of my mods.. but technically the air filter is 'boxed' as such.. :)
Plus when officer plod pops the hood.. he isn't gonna see a stupid pod filter or a bov anywhere... so I doubt they'd ask questions.. :)

Stereo id definatley a last in priority.
I dont even use mine anymore  .
Finish the rest of the exhaust, then do the complete air intake kit, then upgrade the fuel pump and finally up the boost to about 17psi.
After that is stage 2 which is more mods for less gains.
george|rst|
14th January 2003, 06:33 AM
Upgrade the fuel system b4 more boost!!.. my injector duty cycle is at around 80% on 16psi... is that to high??? im still running standard fuel system..
[SPESHAL]
14th January 2003, 06:38 AM
80 eh?
Mine isnt even that high.....
Though I wouldnt be suprised if the injectors were bigger, the way it drinks fuel, and the way more suprises turn up each time I talk to the old owner.

hmm, maybe its telling me my fuel pump is getting old..
adam|RSLC|
14th January 2003, 07:09 AM
goerge 80% sounds about right you can up to 90 b4 the injectors start to loose control , With the mods you got it should be making some decent numbers anyway .
Bosco , for gods sake but SOME boost in the thing , the std computer is fine for mild boost 15-16 through the whole rev range , i WILL NOT lean out it will over fuel a little though . The std fuel pump will loose pressure at around the 18 psi mark from experience while running the vf12 turbo
Changing the coil packs also is a good idea , as a back fire under load will make short work of that turbo

I replaced my coil packs a long time ago.. with the bosch items at the reccomendation of evade.. and for a long time the thing ran wonderfully..
Just lately... its been so on and off.. one day it will run perfectly.. then sometimes as soon as you stomp the throttle open.. it spools.. then BANG *hey look I just made a huge black cloud* and then it boosts hard..
I seriously reckon there is something amiss with one of the stupid sensors occasionally fking out.. however since I can't get an ecu check mode from my ecu.. I'm none the wiser.. I just can't wait to piss off all the stupid wiring under my bonnet and replace it all completely with EMS.. just pisses me off that I can't use the full potential of my engine cos something is always stuffing up...

karupt , sounds like the spark is jumping , but since you got coils i would check to leads or spark plug boots incase there is a tiny hole where it can earth to the body. is there something wrong with your ecu ? is that why it wont go into diagnostic mode?

My car is doing exactly the same thing as yours karupt. Its been driving me insane. I was thinking the same thing as you adam, so I got a new set of NGK Iridium spark plugs yesterday. I get them at trade(4 for $55) which is not so bad. I'm hoping that solves the problem.I'll find out in 2 weeks when I finally get my car back on the road. I just picked up my new Clutch plate today- $510! Thats not including the pressure plate-it just needed machining as it still has 1300kg clamping force. Can't wait.

Exec5l,
My car has two ecu looms in the car... one running the car as such, the other running the new engine v3 wrx ra motor... when I run the RA ecu.. my car goes into limp home mode after 15 mins and rev limits to 4 grand.. so for the past 6 months I have been running a standard OZ delivered RS ecu.. it runs the car however is a very vanilla ignition curve and such, thus I can run well over 20psi without pinging...
My ECU loom and ecu sit underneath my passenger seat... and there is no plugin for subaru select.. and no CEL light.. I have tried using the pin outs and shorting out the appropriate ones and putting a test light on the cel pins.. however does not give any error codes..
I can't see why the spark would be jumping so haphazardly.. it sounds to me like the map sensor is detecting huge amounts of boost and fuel cutting it.. however sometimes it does it other times it doesn't... I have a turbosmart FCD wired up.. but thats been playing up lately.. GRRRRRR
I wish I could get the RA ecu working and find out why its doing this 4,000rpm bullshit.. it would save me from going full aftermarket ecu..
Running with the RA ecu.. on 15psi.. with the stock top mount.. the car was an absolute weapon.. more so than now with front mount.. and 19psi.. :(

The cooler isn't that massive... its only 700~x300x75mm... I was actually looking at one that was 800... but that was a little drastic... it doesn't look quite as big with the front bar on now, however given the chance I'd leave the bar off.. though the amount of looks I got from police driving it like that.. convinced me to put the bar on...
Its realistically the largest practical cooler that will go on the car.. I was fortunate enough to get it for a fantastic price as a friend of mine was selling all his stuff from his 00 wrx.. so I snapped it up quick..
It may seem overly large for the application.. but I am aiming for over 200kw @ wheels.. and to be honest I haven't noticed ANY more lag than standard with this cooler

I think the filter in the guard is actually legal. All of the kits APS do for the WRX feature a K&N in the front right guard connected with Latex piping (very safe - lol) and they brag that all their stuff meets ADR's and stuff.
Also I have a mate who just bought an MY00 with APS RT spec kit on it with the filter in the guard - he bought it as roadworthy too!
I dont think there will be too much of a problem with that one.
