Hey all, im havin an argument with a workmate, he rekons that v8's are the be all and end all... i rekon a nicely modded RX-7, or R34 Skyline would own an 8.

i want a site with some track times etc so that i can shut him down, or any info at all, do they even race imports or super GT class at bathurst ??? i know porsches used to race there even ??

Peter brock raced a nissan GTR against v8's at bathurst once, cleaned up. They then changed the rules and disqualified its ass cos its a 4wd, 4ws, twin turbo

I am pretty sure that Peter Brock never raced in a GTR.
Mark Skaife and Jim Richards did.
And they kicked arse.

Yeah, back with the R32 GTR in '91 and '92. In 1993 they brought in the V8 Supercars format as we know it now...Ford Vs Holden. IMO a bit of a pity as it was good to see a variety of other manufacturers mixing it up
(my 2cents)

There is so much mis-information about that. They were never "banned" or "kicked out" or "disqualified". The formula for touring cars all around the world was changing, and Australia simply fell into line with everyone else. Yes the Skylines were no longer eligable, and neither were the Sierras, or the M3's or a bunch of other cars which was the same all around the world. This was because crowd levels were dropping, and the current crop of touring cars were seen as being too distant and irrelevant to the regular punter. They were also becoming very expensive for teams to run.

The formula actually changed to SuperTourers, and the V8's were launched in competition to that. The SuperTourers eventually died off, leaving it all to the V8's. (which is similar to what has happened with the DTM V8's in Europe).

Yes the Skylines won Bathurst twice in 91/92... so did the Sierra's in 88/89... so did the Commodores in 86/87... and 95/96... just to name a few.

And when they put Richards and Skaife into a V8, they finished only 10 seconds behind the winner in 1993... so you have to give the driver SOME credit.

Generally around the 2:08 mark, although Murph cracked a 2:06

No skylines in there, but plenty of weapons grade performance.
But the best car there (the 7 litre Monaro) was around 10 seconds a lap slower than the V8's. The fastest STI's were 30 seconds a lap slower!!

So in answer to the original question... V8's win. They are after all a purpose built race car. A nicely modded RX-7 or R34 would not come close.

Personally I find the V8's pretty boring, and much prefer the GTP and Targa stuff.

Go Tim! :) Nice work... Have you been to Winton? My best (in my Stock 2.2 Vectra) is a 1:55 (unoffically).

Yeah I too find V8's boring so i look further afield to races like the GTP and Targa. Makes me wish they broadcasted the All Japan Grand Touring Cars (JGTC) over here too, soo much variety! :)

Ha ha ha, scored me a Bathurst 1000 AFX set the other day at a raffle. Only problem is it's too damn big to set up in the living room without having my 2 year old trashing it !

Don't worry Kev. In another 12 to 18 months, he'll love it!!
In fact he'll be asking you to set it up every other day!!
(and your missus will be asking you to pack it up about as often)

There's always the wall and roof... and some funky industrial strength magnets. How cool would that be... laying on your back racing the cars around on the roof!! :D

I personally think the V8's are great to watch, its not as if its the one car/team thats winning every race, unlike F1 or even the V8's a few years back, funny how a few holden fans think the V8's are crap now they arent dominating though ;-)

If your friend was talking about racing cars, then the current lap record of Murphs at 2:06 would be damn near impossible to get near with a lightly modded GTR or RX-7. But vs a JGTC car, albeit they are V8's as well, it would be a great duel.

Imagine if you will, a true would touring car championship, cars from the JGTC, DTM, Nascar(that'd be hilarious) and the V8supercars. Grab the top 6 cars from each championship, gather them at the greatest race track in the world, the NurburgRing, and you've set the scene for a true battle of the best. There'd need to be a handicap formula, just to even out the field, otherwise the highest horsepowered cars would ultimately win.

Ok time to stop dreaming now, only 6 days til i get my fix at the Sandown 500 :-)
