View Full Version : Aussie Year Models

I'm new to this group, but I owned a White 91 RS about 6 years ago..... FANTASTIC car... should never have sold it
Anyhow... can someone explain the year models released in Oz please???
As far as I knew, back when I was more involved (but WAY before anyone had websites about them) the RS was the 1st Gen Liberty shape.... kinda square/wedge shaped, but had a different rear quarter glass (didn't have the Liberty name at bottom of quarter glass area). I understood these models to be the ONLY RS, indeed only Turbo Liberty, sold in Oz.... years 1991-1992.
But, from my understanding, the 2nd Gen Liberty (my dates could be wrong, but 1993 to 1996??? ) was NOT sold in Oz with Turbo option. The similar shaped, but rounded, version. It is THIS model I would dearly love to buy, if they are around.
The 3rd Gen model (1996-2001 or so???) was initially non-turbo, until the later released B4 Twin Turbo model, and now the current model single turbo GT being the 4th Gen version.
There are several posts in here about 93 or 94 model RS Turbos. Can someone please put me straight on the models and dates??? If they are genuinely 2nd Gen ROUND Liberty Turbos (I think they were called GT or GTB for the wagon, overseas) then I would be interested in buying, if any are for sale.
Any help is appreciated
Thanx

Ok a search would find the answers but ill give you a quick run down.
1989-1994: Gen 1
1994-1998: Gen 2 (the one your after by the sounds of it)
1998-2003: Gen 3
2003- ???? : Gen 4 (current)
The twin turbos from the years 1994 onwards weren't brought in by Subaru OZ in the 2nd gen model (like mine) but they did bring in B4's in 2001. But they were only sedans.
Hope that helps.

Also in the 1989-1994: Gen 1 there was a series 1-2, there are some cosmetic differences, and different rear suspension i think, but the differences included the badge under the back qrt window, however there wasnt a turbo model in the series one which was 89-91, so there isnt any aus delivered rs's till 91 which where series two, the differences where series one had chunkier headlights and a honey comb grille, but there are some gen 1 turbo legacys getting around, which have the square foglights.
Cheers,

Thanx guys for the responses.
My next question is..... WAS the 2nd Gen Liberty sold in Oz with Turbo version???
OR... if not..... do guys here import them from NZ or Japan directly, or just modify an existing Aussie-spec Gen2 with a front or half cut ???
I LOVED my genuine RS, but I would love to have a turbo Gen2. Can't afford a B4 or GT just yet
Cheers

Sorry guys... i'm hpeless at this forums thing
I THINK, from what ive read others posting, that i want a 93 onwards Legacy GT.
Where in Oz can I get one? I believe they weren't sold on the normal market... can I only get hold of one thru Jap Import???
Or anyone got one for sale?
I'm gettin a bit old and tired to go thru testing and tuning my cars... i'd like to buy one that is slightly modified if possible... not going racing.. much... but better than stock would be cool
Cheers

The Gen2 never came out here in a turbo, if you read deaks's first post, however the closest thing we got was a B4 which was a Gen3 and that was a twin turbo, however there are afew floating around that have been personally imported that you can buy in australia, however they where never sold new. If you look up deaks has a gen2 twin turbo wagon (however his is now a single :P) Also most of them are auto, the manual ones are pretty rare.
Also there are afew aust delivered ones that have been converted to a turbo using and half cut, or a selction of bits and engine, there are afew people in this club who have them. However if your old and tired buy a legacy, as you will have afew headaches , unless ........................... *cue al*
since al is currently un-avaliable, al has done the conversions and does them alot, and he will surley post soon :P He posted a Gen2 wagon a while ago with a single turbo WRX engine in it, you could ask him about that if your interested in buying one.

Thanx Thomas,
Answered my questions
Ive never been up to Sunspares, but I live in Brissy, so it's an easy thing for me to go for a drive one weekend and talk to the guys there.
I'm not THAT old :? at 30, but i've sorta done my time modifying cars.... I'm probly looking at buying one ready done..... and being so close to Al & the experts, it wouldnt be too much hassle should things go stale somewhere.
Thanx again..... hopefully i'll soon be posting as a new (repeat) RS (or GT) owner.
Umm... one last one.... IF i do get a Gen2 Turbo... what is it known as??? Is it a GT Liberty, GT Legacy, or still nkown as an RS ???
Cheers

GT or RS Legacy...depending on which model it is! unless someone's converted a gen2 Liberty into an RS or GT, and badged it as such

Yeah to clarify that, Libertys are australian delivered, everything else is a legacy.

Cool... thanx guys,
So what I'm looking for is a Gen2 Legacy RS or GT (preferably wagon..... GTB ?)
I'll keep my eyes peeled in the FS section here.
Anyone able to recommend an external source to check also? Trading Post, or Unique Cars?
