Anyone here into vinyl? And i don't mean in some black figure hugging bizarre fetish sort of way.
The way music was meant to be heard!!
Any DJ wannabes, scratchers, mixers or just plain old spinners?
I bought a cheap late 70's Pioneer turntable a couple of years back so i could resurect my modest vinyl collection & got a bit hooked on it. Bought a whole back catalogue of Kiss records off Ebay over a period of 6 months & now i just can't stop.
Always been into hip hop also so i updated my old deck a couple of months ago & bought a couple of nice Stanton decks & a mixer for the shed.
The missus hates it but i love mixing & cutting it up, it's much harder than it looks!
Anyone else into vinyl?
Cheers

Hmm, my skills aren't quite where they need to be to perform such a task.
(yet), besides i need a couple of nice boxer rumble samples!
Man new vinyl is expensive though! Looking at the new prodigy lp & sanity want $65 for it!
I can get it off ebay cheaper than that but it certainly makes it an expensive hobby.

I'm a big fan of vinyl, but never got into mixing. After looking at DJ's and such I decided it was either incredibly easy or incredibly hard and definately expensive so i steer clear.
We've got heaps of old records that may be getting thrown out or donated somewhere sooner or later, do you want me to keep you in mind SteveJ?
rec0il: Have to agree with you there, add a set of decent headphones and they are even better. I'm still yet to hear Lateralus in SACD
anyway

Let me know what's in the inventory, could be some gold!
Decks are pretty pricy, i paid $450 each + another $100 for the mixer, but that's a very low end mixer. Technics are pretty much the way to go but just a bit out of my price bracket.

i just find it funny that they take the songs to the vinyl cutting plant on CD after they've mixed the songs on their digital systems...
back in the day when they printed straight off the desk to the master cutting machine or onto tape it was a different story
definately has a 'sound' to it, but its the colouration of the vinyl that you are hearing, on a digital track!

Yeah but vinyl has a romantic hook attached to it from a time long gone when life was more simple.
Man i have so many memories of me playing with my mum & dads old "Kreisler" stereogram, i remember my first record, Brian Ferry "lets stick together", 1975 & i still have that record!
2nd was Old 55 (is anyone here old enough to remember "on the prowl?)

Not a DJ here but do have a mate that owns his PA hire company. Bumped in a huge day party last night at South Atlantic Wharf in Melbs.
4 stages 2 of them with live acts and a bucket load of sound, NEXO Sound to be exact!
Main stage got to pop the virginty of the new 3 deck, read 3 brand new SLJ 1200's, DJM 600 and 2 CDJ 1000's console. All set into a nice BIG HEAVY ASS road case to cart it all around.

Must admit there is something about having some top class Vinyls of your fave albums.
Ive got a smallish collection, mainly dance stuff, like Leftism (leftfield), some german trance, oh and massive attack's mezzanine...
I usually go hunting in the cheap vinyl section of landspeed and JB's here in Canberra - usually find some gold!
Mates of mine have decks and have messed about a lil (he is a gun Drum and Bass DJ in adelaide) but need a lot more practice to even be deemed decent.
Also planned on buying decks, if I didnt sink my money into my lib

i do a little bit of dj'n. mainly at mates party's ect. wanted to get into the mainstream dj'n in clubs but seen what it does to poeple.... got american dj deck but usually play on technic 1200's. very nice decks. mainly play drum and bass but have also got stuff for the ladies. cheesy house and some harder stuff. its an expensive hobby, 20 bucks a vinyl mounts up when you got 100+.

You can't go past some quality vinyl for sound and presence.
One of my faves is Pink Floyd's "Sheep" on vinyl.
That is mad thru headphones !
I run a vintage (early seventies Pioneer mixed components with Acculab cabs) setup strickly for vinyl only.
Got the usual 6.1 amp with all the tricky settings for sound modelling etc for the cd/dvd stuff, paired with modern speaker cabs.
I feel you get warmer bass thru vinyl and more so with vintage speakers as a combo, hence one might say you need both a "modern" setup for digitally recored electronic based music like Aphex Twin, and an older setup setup for vinyl, maybe even go as far as a valvestate amplifer stage for best results.
Where's my money tree ..........................

The "warm" sound he is talking about is distortion.
What a lot of people fail to understand in the cd vs lp debate is that you are supposed to be listening to the music not the equipment that is reproducing it.
CD players were often criticised in the early days because thay all sounded much the same. ie, they reproduced the music without adding much of their own colouration (read:distortion), whereas all turntables sound different due to their different mechanical resonances, bearing noise etc.
Risky RS,
Don't even get me started on why valve amps are a total waste of money (not to mention electricity)...
PS "valvestate" was a term coined by at least one maker of guitar amps. Most contained no glass bottles at all, just a simple "soft clip" circuit and maybe some stages with no negative feedback to help simulate a valve sound...

hehe, funny how when people start talking about valves it leads to guitar amps. ;)
I've always had a soft spot for Fender amps particularly ones made in the 60's/70's. Mate of mine has a very old but very nice Fender Concert 120 that has seen many a gig and many more better days but it still manages to out power a lot of the newer transistor amps out there. ;) Another fave of mine is the Deville amps made by Fender, do they contain any glass? :?
As for Vinyl, I tend to break out the ol' Sony turn table from time to time and have a dig through my parents' collection. :)

Just secured a copy of the new Prodigy 3LP, from the UK it'll cost me $49 including freight. Sounds alot but Sanity have it for $75 & Vinylwarning want $65 for it (not including freight), not bad & i'm a happy boy!
I've always wondered about valve amps, it seems they've made quite a comeback but the pricetag scares the hell out of me!
