im in a bit of a pickle here guys.....
i finished yr 12 last yr and decided not to go to uni as i want to work with cars.....
now im finished i still have no job as i dont know what i want to do???
i dont want to be just an average mechanic as i am more into the modified car scene and i do not think any performance shops would take me in as they want ppl with experience......
can any of you guys suggest any interesting jobs for me or even better, anywhere that would be interested in hiring........

you'd have to align yourself with a performance tuning house. they arent going to hire you unless you have done atleast a year of your apprentiship first. this way they dont have to train you from go, and dont run the risk of a 1st year drop out.
I'd suggest going and working for someone like subaru so you can at least work on some performance cars.
You'll get to know people in the industry, and then hit them up for a job ;)
other than that. go and visit every performance garage in your area and see if they'll put you on for work experience first, and then a full time role.

dyno tuner is easily the most fun one... making the power and seeing the final product ;)

a little bit left field, but if you want money (well who doesnt), work in the mining and/or heavy vehicle industry, my GF's bro did an apprenticeship with CAT type trucks (Gouf and Gilmore) and has never looked back, he is a bit of a freak with tools and shit, can fix anything, and he gets paid heaps of dosh, gets a work truck, all the allowances under the sun, can get transferred around australia if he wants,
it may not be the car scene, but you earn 3 times as much and then spend it on the car of youre dreams, and with the knowledge you have learnt, can fix anything, they are after apprentices all over Australia I would think
if I had a second chance at a career this would be it for sure.

theres no money in parts, everyone you know or never spoke to expects you to sell them stuff at cost and they have no idea how much it costs to keep a business running - I could not even come close to supporting myself with my business, I'm lucky I have another job. and I know for a fact that mechanics aren't one of the highest paid jobs around.

hey mate heaps of auto apprenticeships in newcastle... like it has been said... you will need at least 1 or 2 years experience at any normal mechanic before autocraft or denstoj even look at you.. and even then the chances of getting in are slim to none as eveybody else the same as you want to do the same... trust me ive tried :D

If you don’t want to be a mechanic and still want to work with cars why not become an autoelectrician.
Should give you enough experience to eventually be able to wire up aftermarket computers and if your lucky enough to get picked up by a Performance shop. You should gain enough experience there to wire and tune cars. Which is where most of the fun is.

Yeah forget the dirty work of doing oil changes and dirty work on family shit boxes...
I'd rather be a sparky any day...

I reckon you might have to move to sydney if you want to work in the "performance" car scene cos theres not much happening in Newcastle.
Andrew, what is denstoj?

Callan: what the other guys have said is pretty much on the money.
To start a good career in the auto industry, i'd suggest the auto-elec field...... coz it can open so many other doors for you
Other than that, the mining/heavy vehicle industry like goq suggested. BIG money to get you on track for the future.

you could try putting in your resume at skilled engineering and pathways labour hire (both in mayfield). They might hire people in the automotive industry.
What about car dealerships, u can start off as a cleaner?
