Hoon drivers target of crackdown
02may05
BURN-outs, doughnuts, drag races and other hoon driving will cost motorists dearly in South Australia from today.
Even drivers with their stereos blaring face having their cars impounded for 48 hours as part of a state government crackdown on the anti-social behaviour.
The new anti-hoon laws are aimed at protecting lives and property and giving peace to long-suffering residents affected by the stupidity of a minority of drivers, Premier Mike Rann said.
The first phase of the new laws, which came into effect in February, involved creating new offences of misuse of a vehicle and of failing to obey a police order to reduce noise from a car stereo.
Both offences carry a maximum fine of $1,250.
The second phase, effective from today, gives police the power to impound vehicles for 48 hours where drivers are suspected of being involved in hoon behaviour.
If convicted, drivers face having their vehicles impounded for three months for a first offence, up to six months for a second offence, and permanently for a third or more offence.
Cars permanently impounded will be sold with the proceeds going to the victims of crime fund.
"This is about reducing anti-social behaviour and trying to stop reckless, selfish drivers from putting lives at risk and wrecking the peace for others," Mr Rann said.
"People should be comforted by these new laws as police now have the power to move in immediately to stop these idiots in their tracks."
