ah well.. it looks like it's confirmed

aside from personal imports, no more import legacys

Here is another update for all those wondering when the proposed change to the 15 year rule will be finalised.

As you can see from the following update from Minister Jim Lloyd's office, the available information is quite vague (as usual) but it does appear that there may be no more than 1 to 2 weeks left before the rule is pushed back to 1988 and older models:

-----------------------------
#
At this stage, the current plan is to aim to have the changes to the regulations entered onto the Federal Register (ie. the new term for Gazettal) sometime possibly in the second or third week of May. I cannot be more specific than that. The regulations become law the day after entry into the Register. I expect that there will be sufficient public advice at the time to inform all interested parties.
#
This information is to the best of our knowledge and expectations as at today. The timetable for the regulation changes may change but I am unable to provide any definitive advice at this point in time.
-----------------------------

And this update comes from DOTARS:

-----------------------------
The changes to the 15 year or older scheme should be gazetted in the next 2 weeks.
-----------------------------

However, until the change is officially reported in the Australian Goverment Gazette (published every Wednesday at http://www.law.gov.au/portal/govgazonline.nsf/(custom-govnot-pub-view)?OpenView), the rule continues to operate as normal. Since since this has not yet occurred we are still able to source up to May 1990 models to order for customers, however you are encouraged not to delay if you still wish to import. This is a great opportunity that from all indications is unlikely to last much longer.

DOTARS are processing Import Approvals providing that applications are submitted prior to the official rule change and providing that the vehicle is 15 years old to the month at the time of the application. Since this can be done by fax, there is no risk of being stuck without an Import Approval so it is definitely not too late to start searching now.

Well done to all of you who have made your views known so far. It has definitely had an impact on the timeframe of these changes, so keep the pressure up and please encourage everyone you know to do the same.
