Well after waiting a week for it I finally got it...
1991 Liberty GX - AWD with RS2000 motor (rebuilt with forged pistons and metal gaskets), front mount intercooler (2 x RX7 coolers welded together), heavy duty clutch, lowered with king springs and koni shocks... POD filter... fun machine @ 12psi.
This thing is the best thing I've ever driven, kicking myself at not getting one a few years back. Tonight it was pouring with rain after and even so after 20 or so hard launches with no slip the conclusion was that AWD ROCKS - but you all knew that :)... SO MUCH FUN.
I think the turbo has to be resized though as he runs out of puff at about 6000 - 6500, well below the redline... any recommendations?

good stuff mate, your best option regarding your turbo would probably be to get a TDO5H, many guys are running them on here and are well regarded as a great fairly cheap upgrade. you can pick a reco'd one up from $350-$500.
cheers. luke

yep go the TD05H and grab a VOS chip as well, 16psi will add some more balls over the 12 ;) make some use of those forged internals!

I picked him up for 10K from the guy who does all my RX7 work ( http://www.sarotors.org/files/br_02.jpg ) so I know its quality - I just hope that its a good price.
The sooner the gearbox goes the sooner I can get a stronger one in there :)
Will get some pics and sound a bit later today hopefully.

Apparently its a TD05... but I've got no idea - big learning curve coming right up.
I live up in North Haven and have 4 WRX's in the street, one RS and a Nissan Skyline ... hope one of these is someone here :)

ROFL... well it didn't last to long. Was running a TD05 @ 12 psi and it was a nasty ending to the old gearbox.
So does any1 have some suggestions on something that is strong and will be ok for a few months until i can afford some syncho's etc? Current budget about 2K.

Prolly give mark a call @ subawreck. He has a good handle on the various options avail to you.
Seems strange that the TD05 is running out of puff @ 6500rpm esp if you are only running 12 pound. Sure its not a TD04? Either that or the ECU is pulling a heap of timing out at high revs due to detonation/lifter noise.

Yeah i was strange but then after a while I figured out why... I was comparing it to the characteristics of a turbo on a rotor. This is a smaller turbo on a piston so it is of course going to feel different... DER me ;)

mark (markmcrs) would be the guy to talk to - subareck 82854444, main north rd opposite parafield airport.
he also has a TD05 pumping 19psi into rex motor. doesn't feel like it lacks top end the few times i've driven it..... :D

given the "contant" flow charactoristics of a rotor, yes you could be right in that it is just seat of the pants feel making you think like you were.
Second Geachy on the above tho...Mark is the one to chat to re the TD05...given the pounding that he gives his!!!

Thanks for the contact details guys - good to get a good picture of everything. I'm now getting a RS turbo box through Shaun @ Boostworx, who is sourcing the box from S & J auto. Hopefully this will last until I can buy some nice strong syncro gearsets for 1st and 2nd (then its sidestep time :) ). He is also chucking in a boostcut defender and another fuel pump so it should be nice for hopefully 16psi...
Just out of interest what do u guys think, is 16-18psi going to be ok or should I stick to about 14psi?
P.S. Someone over the road is having a WRX working bee today, 9 WRX's :) SICK

16-17 psi with a new fuel pump should be fine.
also, instead of the boost cut defender, a cheaper option you could consider is a one way valve in the line to the MAP sensor.

Gday fellas. The new RS gearbox arrived today and I spent a few hours replacing the old clutch pedal and setting up the new master cylinder and unbolting the bellhousing... tomorrow the car goes onto the Hoist and the new box goes in with an Exedy clutch...can't wait.
While I am here... can some1 please gimme an estimate on roughly how much 15psi is going to make? (EJ20T, 2.5" exhaust, TD05H)... thanks

a 3" exhaust should give u some more gains wouldnt it?

130 atw's seems abit low doesnt it? I would like to think it could do 150 atw's with a tdo5

130 sounds like a boosted TD04 with Vos and exhaust. 150-160 sounds more like TD05 with Vos and exhaust. Shine a torch on compressor housing and it will say TD04 or TD05. Just remember that autos are the ultimate sleepers......

Hi guys, its a TD05 turbo. The gearbox finally went in well but the diff needed changing so luckily Mark had one out at Subbiewreck.
And then... last night in Adelaide it was raining and for some reason so many SS / Clubsport / Silvia / RX7s wanted to drag.... mwahahahahahaah the joy of high rpm launches in the wet ... must have done at least 50 launches.
Auto sleeper - but then you can't do the massive rpm launches?

Its a std RS turbo gearbox...
.... it will probably need some better synchros before to long.
Geach
12th September 2005, 06:23 PM
LOL, you'll need more than syncros, try new gears.
don't break it until after the cruise on sunday, there should be 2 RS' with straightcuts (1 dog, 1 syncro engagement) - one of them will do some high RPM launches ey mark....

Vasilli,
Your going to munch another gearbox pretty quickly if you keep that up.
Not deterred by already blowing one gearbox hey....
RS gears are very similar to GX gears in size and strength IMHO.
As for power at the wheels with TD05H @ 15psi and a 2.5inch exhaust I would estimate around 140kw's ATW's.
I only just made 150 ATw's @ 17.2 psi and 3 inch exhaust.
Mark.

Nah wasn't me - I woulda waved if it was though ...
From what I've read / been told you can get some very strong synchros from SJ auto for about 2700 bucks for 1st and 2nd gear... http://www.sjautomotive.com.au

I just want a good strong daily car that puts out about 150kw and can handle massive launches so if a few things break on the way then I know what needs to be strengthened.
