Well as novilisation of ones mods to there cars is the in thing
1 week ago i pulled out the gearbox so i could change the clutch
after talking to a few of the melbourne Veterans who do this on a weekly basis   they walked me thru the process, sounded pretty easy to me so last sat i got around to pulling out the box took me about 1.5 hours had the whole thing out and i was quite chafued with myself, got around to ordering new clutch during the week and then My good Mate Karupt offers his skilled hands to put the box back in, Now i am thinking that with the two of us our massive amounts of skill, muscle and all round talent that this would be a simply easy job, Alas god hates me for all the Cockroaches that i kill or something and i must say that this was the c&^tist of Jobs eva, now before i put the box back in i drained the thing of oil, so imagin my horra when more fugging oil has leaked out of the tailshaft splin giving my skin and hair Glistning properties, ( i am sure the pricks who designed gearbox oil said now this has to be the foulest smelling shit on the plannet to shit the poor assholes that have to do this every fugging day)
After what seemed like an eternity of cussing grunting screaming and sweaing, we finally got the box on the spline and from then on it was all apples

Not let this be a warning to anyone who is going to attamp a gearbox change or clutch change on there own, get a quote from a few mechanics first, this is a C&^tTAXE of a job.. and gearbox oil does wonders for your skin and hair

On the Plus side i took the car for a thrash tonight and i must say its 20% stronger than it was before with the slipping clutch, its amazing how much power you can lose from a slipping clutch :D :D

aww well its time for my 10th shower today so i can try and get gearbox oil out of my scalp

LOL!

Mate I well and truely know how you feel.
Slotting the box back onto the motor is the worst part of the whole job by a mile.
I still have dramas getting gearboxes back on depite having a pit and now a gearbox hoist as well and I'm scared to know how many times I have pulled an AWD subie gearbox out by now.

Did you jack the motor up at all?
With the gearbox out, the motor falls slightly forward and if you don't jack the motor up from underneath to level it again it makes the angle worse when trying to slide the gearbox back on.

Mark.

I hear gearbox oil is good for dandruff...

Tough break dood, but glad it all worked out in the end. I guess its the age old question most of us inexperienced mechanic wannabes ask ourselves...is it worth paying someone else to do it...most the time its yes for me

But hey it can only get better from the first attempt right?

Sniff, is that gearbox oil I can smell in my fuggin hair ? :)

Ghetto operation number 1.. but in the end it all worked out.. I cant count the amount of times I had a fuggin gearbox laying on my arm/chest/neck/head today.. was a huge feeling of relief when it all went together, and when the clutch started working, as IF we didnt have enough problems, for the clutch to fugg out.. BAH!

I have to pull my gearbox out this week.. and I soooo don't wanna attempt it.. I've done it before and never had so many problems as I had today with reg.dizzls

:)

Reggy nice novel, once again!!

I hate doing RS's boxes!!

it's only hard to put the box back in if you haven't aligned the clutch properly, so invest in a clutch aligning tool!

hint: an old input shaft is the best aligning tool you can get

Oh man thanks for telling me. i was considering doing my box myself. xept that ive got a busted diff. I think ill go with the 1600 dollar quote. is that reasonable?

JELISS
9th August 2005, 01:16 PM
Good work Reggy ! ... yes they are a pain in the ass but try doing it by yourself!!! as in one person ! it's a real pain but as proven definately do-able !

WogRS,

Whats that quote for ? the diff or the gearbox ? and is that replacement plus labour ? ...

WogRS
9th August 2005, 01:20 PM
my dad got a quote for it while i was at tafe. basically it is definitely the diff, but the spider gear is suspected to be faulty too. I dont know what the spider gear is. Auto btw. i think for that price its just to replace the diff. including labour.

hahah can't say i've had gearbox oil on me, certainly does smell like shit though.

Hey 2l_milk,
Few tips, like what mark said you have to jack up the front of the motor so the flywheel and clutch points more towards the floor.
Also if you've got a large trolly jack you can sometimes balance the gearbox on the jack and then jack the box up into position. Helps if you got 2 people doing it, but I've done many a rwd box by myself.

You gotta wiggle the box also, its never going to go on without wiggling.

This is a must...the clutch plate must be dead centre on the flywheel when you tighten up the pressure plate fully.
So the steps are, fit clutch plate and pressure plate and loosely tighten it up so the clutch plate can still move around, use a long screw driver to lever it around and use a torch until its looks visually dead centre(not easy) with the spigot bearing(bearing in the flywheel) Torque it up with torque wrench. Done.

Karupt, U had the gearbox on your chest etc, thats keen!!

Reggy
9th August 2005, 01:26 PM
yeah it was on our chests

after it fell of the jack

RSKY
9th August 2005, 01:27 PM
gearbox on the chest hurts bad!

it hurts even more when it fulls off the jack and onto your arm!

Reggy
9th August 2005, 01:35 PM
Yep had that too and then the blocks of wood fell on my head to boot

ahh great times hey K :P :P

2l_milk
9th August 2005, 05:02 PM
urrrrrr i hope it it is really satisfying does anyone have pics of the flywheel when it is on just so i can see what it looks like :)

paddo
9th August 2005, 05:25 PM
you dont need to take the fly wheel off unless you are planning on changing the clutch or the fly wheel.
