After 3 months off the road it looks like I may one day drive my RS again.
Fitted the STI 6 speed yesterday (on the ground, thanks to Paul (cruisEH) for the hand lifting the bloody thing into place)
The shifter was bent and was also hitting the floor (I’m still using the 5 speed xmember) but after some manipulation it fitted in just fine.
I've fitted V6 STI front and rear xmembers, alloy lover arms, V6 hubs front and rear V6 front sway bar.
I should be hopefully getting my engine back in the next week or two and should in theory have it finished for Adelaide.
Will be fitting the DMS coil overs.
Mick
PS the last pic is of the rallycar that i bought a month or so ago.

Wouldn't mind one of those boxes...looking good.
So what's the weight difference between control arms?

Starting to look more like a car now.
Not sure on the weight diff but they are a fair bit lighter.

I haven't heard of one person getting a 6 speed and not having issues with the linkages. They're either bent or the original linkages were bent so they've been swapped at some point, usually with the wrong ones. The 5 speed crossmember shouldn't make much difference I don't think. They appear to be the same and I've used both without issues.
If you want the shifter/rubbber boot assembly to not just sit there loosely and look a bit better you can stretch the rubber boot over so it sits just below that lip. It's a REALLY tight fit but it does fit and it looks really neat that way.

Judging by the calibre of the rest of your set up you're going to upgrade those brakes, what to? Are you using a wrx rear diff or are you going to an R180 setup? Also what are you going to use to control DCCD?
Nice coilovers, I won't be able to afford any before Adelaide so it's going to be crappy stock GX items for me.
Datman

Yeah once the car is running again Brembos all round and r180 rear will be the next stage in its development.
its currently running an r160.
unfortunatly is a non DCCD box.
ill pull the boot up, look better that way :)

I thought all the newer STi 6 speeds were DCCD. What year is it?
For the boot I took the gear knob off and slid it over the top. I think it will be a lot harder going the other way due to the shape of that cone bit and as I said it's a REALLY tight fit.
So what's the story on the motor? I vaguely remember you were going with a 2.5 is that right?
Datman
29th October 2006, 09:33 PM
Its out of a 02 STI C spec according to the code.
See that wd40 off to the side, that will help be get it back up ;)
Yeah building up a 2.5 at the moment forged internals etc... Should put out some reasonable power.

Ahh ok. It looked newer than '02, nice and shiny. At least the spec C has a front LSD.

It has a brand new bellhousing as the original one was damaged in an accident. people winge about having to spend $1000 on a gearbox, try spending that on just a bell housing. :(

Jas, i think keeping up with the jones's (or hardings :D) will send us all broke, i think getting the car to a stage where its reliable, and enjoyable, is all that matters. If i wanted to break into the 10s bracket, i think id just go buy a "busa" :D
seriously though, micks cars going to be mighty fast :P

Looking good mate, although I think you need to be looking for something bigger than the Brembos...... do Willwood make 6 or 8 pots?? :P
Cant wait till this things on the road...... your last engine setup was awesome, this will be interesting :D

I agree with Cruising.. Mick's last setup was awesome. Can't wait to hear the new car whizz past my place!

that's got to be the cleanest bellhousing i've ever seen.. is the trans new or reco? or did u just sit there for hours on end with a rag, an old toothbrush and some form of petrolium? :D
the car will be one nice unit to drive, good luck with it

Sheppo, the bellhousing is completely new so no cleaning was done to it.. It was mated to a used (smashed) 6 speed. The insides have not been reco'd i don't think.

smashed 6 speed!!, was the spec-C a race car?
cruisEH
31st October 2006, 05:10 PM
it was a write off mick bought from the auctions, no doubt owned by some fullee sik habeeb who had twin 5 inch cannons, a 6 speed, 18's and a TD04 on it :) hahahah
the majority of the car was worthless, the motor has the head exhaust studs torn out, smashed cam wheels, broken rear block casing where it bolts to the gearbox (like the whole corner missing) and other damage.. the box bell housing was split through the clutch fork hole to the starter hole, whole corner smashed off. tailshaft resembled a banana.
im buying the motor to rebuild a MY99 motor i have in the garage (need the heads)

Willwood do make a 6 pot, Sam aka SLEPT has them on his car.
Make my 4 pots look like drum brakes.....

I think Brembos are considered to be much better than wilwoods or any of the current batch of aftermarket callipers.
From what I gather the wilwoods don't have enough strength in the calliper body. Probably more than adequate for anything short of a circuit car though.
The bolts that hold the calliper body need to be at least in line with the pistons to give sufficient body rigidity. That's why Brembos cover half the rotor.
A bit OT Mick. Sorry.

All good Al, I'm planning on Brembos, easy to find (hard to find at a good price though)
project just had two big kicks in the teeth today, I spoke Mark and the clutch I sent him to reco is not up for the job and my engine builder told me my heads are no good. (cant be ported enough to flow big HP.
Soooooo, the car will not be at Adelaide, and will just sit there until I find a set of late STI heads(99+ to suit the 05 C spec manifold I have) and I can find another large sum of money for another clutch.
Grrrrrrrrrr........
but thats half the fun of building cars.

']What's with the clutch Mick. Refund time.
Nothing wrong with the clutch as such, it just isn't up to being bolted behind his motor with it's intended HP.
The pressure plate has 1050kgs of clamp and this can't be increased cheaply.
I have 1800kgs of clamp from my 6 speed clutch kit and this is what mick will need as well, but it ain't cheap to buy....
Mark.

1st November 2006, 08:29 PM
Ok. I'll see if I can get Mick a 6 speed clutch to replace the Cusco. It can go in my new project with a normal friction plate.
Datman
1st November 2006, 08:30 PM
nah, I dont think so Al. unless the guy you sourced it from is up for it.
the issue is that its only able to clamp around 2500lb not the 4000lb or so that i need.
also the clutch plate is not able to be reco'd so ill have to buy another one new.
So not realy a bad clutch, just not strong enough for the application its needed for.

slightly off topic, but how hard is it to put the motor back in an rs with the gearbox in, as you have mick. reason i ask is that my gearbox is sitting in my shed gathering dust while i wait for my motor to come back from the builders.
is it worth me putting it in now, will give me something to do on saturday...
cheers

Looks like C spec manifold does away with the lower section and is cast in one piece.
When you say clutch plate do you mean the friction plate or the pressure plate Mick?
Datman
1st November 2006, 09:26 PM
yeah, they just dont have tumble generators, they apparently flow 30% more than standard STI?
friction palte, the pucks are bonded on not rivited.

yeah its a legacy GT, not an auto now though, has 98 WRX box.
Yeah my RS has gone from being a fairly quick street car 3 months ago be being a dusty wreck on jack stands ;)

Take the radiator out and have an engine hoist and it's no harder than putting the motor in first and then doing the box. Me and a mate put a motor in with the box already in last weekend.

yeah the only thing you realy need to be careful about is getting the clutch lined up, if its not centered you will have lots of fun trying to get it in.
when you put the engine back in, jack up the front of the gearbox so that your engine mounts clear the Xmember.
