hey guys,
Im loking at putting a 96-98 wrx RA engine into my liberty project car,
does anyone know if these have the same forged internals as the ver 3/4 sti?
it has the vf22 turbo and puts out 206kw from the factory.
i assume it would but does anyone here know for certain
Cheers

I have not pulled an RA engine down but information I have seen on the net is that the RA does not have forged pistons. Only the STi models do whether they be std STi or RA models. It does seem a little strange seeing as the GTB engines have forgies. The trend seemed to be that the 206kw engines had forged bottom end and the 4.44 box.
Here is some data.

They are a fairly desirable half cut to get a hold of but an STi version has more good stuff and the pricing would be similiar.

99% sure the forgies came out on the V3 late 96, before that it's pretty much std WRX internals & the TT only has pressed forgies not drop forged, well that is according to my mechanic anyhoo.

ok, from what I have found out, the RA engine is made from subaru so it dosnt have the forgies in it and the STI engine came from STI with all the good stuff.
so hear is my question now,
does anyone know what they do have to get 206kw??

VF22, 440's, 95mm AFM and the same ecu as a V3 STi. Forgies are in the STi to ensure reliability, they make no difference to the power output.
The turbo on an RA is bigger than on a V3 STi.

ok so the RA engine is a good bet, and is not having the forgies a big deal?
Im not going to go super nuts on the car, front mount and 3" TBE.
sorry for all the questions I just want to get the best engine for the conversion and there are so many options. :)

Can I ask what the price is and what you are getting for the money?

mate you have to remember that despite what some people think there is a difference between a 'wrx ra' and a 'wrx sti ra'.

What makes RAs so good, how long did they make em for year model up to?, curious in straight line in theory a RA would beat a STI, has better top end and similar everything else to a STI am i correct in thinkin this?

I think the STI has better cams & a 7,900 redline, VF23 in the V3, pretty sure WRX RA has a different computer set up, turbo, cams, redline & will self destruct easier as the STI with the forgies will happily run 20psi all day.

Just check the oil regularly hey Tom. :P
