I regretted selling my Gold RS wagon the moment it drove out the gate, so when I spotted this on E-bay a few weeks back I had to own it. It was in Melbourne, with a rooted donk, but I got it cheap. Since it's arrival in Perth a month ago it now has another engine fitted, Stainless 3" turbo back, Speedlines (kept from my old wagon) quick shift, alarm new brake pads and a good clean up. I have a RA close ratio 3.9 box to go in soon. The wagon already had a button clutch, Turbosmart E-Boost, K&N panel filter, better stereo and koni shocks.
It's great to be back in an RS everyday :D

Nice score, especially being a wagon. Future mods? Or are you not going to spend much money on it... HAHAHAHA :P

Nah, no future mods planned other than the C/Ratio gearbox. I'll probably update the rear diff with a '99 WRX one that I keep tripping over, and fit alloy arms and a sump guard for rally reconnaisance duties. Good spare parts car to have on hand at rallies too :tu .

You don't get the feeling that it might get a bit more money spent on it than you intended? It's a genuine RS wagon, you don't need another excuse to spend way to much money  .

Chemtech degreaser brings the alloy parts up shiney, then a can of $2 tyre shine on the rubber and black painted parts rubbed over with a rag :tu
Don't get tyre shine on anything you may want to paint at any time though as it's silicone based.

Hey thanks mate, was my first ever purchase off E-Bay, the bidding was fairly frantic at the end, but luck went my way :tu I guess it was a bit risky buying a car unseen that was going to cost a grand in transport before I even saw it, but it turned out way better than I expected. Cheers.

I'm up for a run - as long as you haven't done any funny business installing my new engine :D

I don't want to de-value everyone elses wagon by revealing the ridiculously low price I paid  Let's just say that including the freight to Perth it worked out 1/2 the going rate :tu :D
It needed a motor though.
Ken, your wagon is going, just needs the wiring for the DCCD finished but it's drivable now, so be here for the cruise. Incedently, RS25WA is very, very fast now :) that close ratio box with 3.9 diffs is just superb. I'm definately installing one in mine now too.

I got bored over Easter so I have now installed a 1996 WRX Ra close ratio gear kit inside a '99 8 bolt casing and a '99 WRX LSD rear diff and shafts. I also modified and fitted a 3" Stainless turbo back exhaust. I don't like cannon muffs so I modified a R32 Skyline stainless muffler with some mandrel bends so it sticks out at the correct angle. And fitted a leather gearstick boot and knob off a 2001 RX Impreza and a leather console lid I had lying around.
Also renewed was the front bumper plastic cover, and the grille and bonnet scoop repainted. It's starting to get to a respectable state now. The Stainless exhaust boosts one full PSI higher than the crappy 3 " mild steel that was on it previous.

Well.....Yeah
I've been acumulating bits 'n pieces for the wagon for a while now, but the catalyst was deciding to replace the leaky steering rack with a WRX one I had leftover from a 1/2 cut.
But the hose couplings are a bit awkward with the engine in place. So I installed a 2.5 engine that I had nearly finished assembling. Nothing fancy, a 96 2.5 N/A bottom end honed and fitted with some pistons from a new crate Sti 257 that had been replaced with forgies. Cost = very little
New ACL race series bearings, measured & plasti-guaged the crank. Fitted a newer better condish oil pump and sump.
I found a 98 N/A 2.5 that had a rooted bottom end and cleaned the heads up, ported the small inlets to match the turbo manifold and drilled and tapped the fittings for water and oil. These heads are solid lifters and have pretty big lift on the cams. I fitted some 440 cc injectors and refitted the VF12 until I get a tunable ECU.
It has a fully open deck and thin cylinder walls so I'm realistic about boost and expeced power, but it's a lot better than a rattly old RS engine. I've retained the top mount water to air as well.
While the motor was out I decided to also install a S204 6 speed DCCD gearbox I was saving for another project.
I'm still waiting for the controller but it drives fine as is.
I've retained the R160 rear for now but it's been fitted with a clutch plate LSD centre and 3.54 gearing and redline oil.
I got a leather gearstick boot from a bug eye Impreza and it fits perfectly around the 6MT shifter.
I also installed some 326mm front Brembo rotors with big 2 pot calipers, looking for some propper Brembos at the right price now and a PFC so I can tune it.
I have a VF23 and a VF22, anyone care to speculate which will suit this better?

I can now officially confirm that Doug's wagon goes sideways! (not as sideways as RX7s in the wet though as we discovered!) haha

2.5 + 6-speed = makes my pants fit nice.
Bah to the PowerFC. Wouldn't a 22/23 be a little out of breath on a 2.5? Stock headers? :D
I'm still waiting for the controller but it drives fine as is.
There is a group buy being organised on Rexnet for Spiider's DCCD Pro controllers. 10 or 20 orders for 20% off (can't remember which)

I'd be going with the vf23 myself, only because I have question marks over 22 comp wheels.

13th July 2008, 10:41 PM
Yeah, I've heard stories of 22 comp wheel failure, never had any experience with them myself though. I want it to be under stressed as I'm a little concerned about the long term durability of the block.
Stock WRX headers Marv. They look to be a slighly worse flowing design than RS ones but they were nice and shiney new, and free!

Yeah, still got it. The 2.5 was short lived though. Have gone back to a 300,000km RS 2.0 I bought off Mitcho for the short term. :(
