My baby is a genuine JDM Legacy GT b spec wagon, late 96 model so officially a my97 according to the papers i got with it

it was brought in 2003 as a personal import... this is what it looked like when the QLD owner had it..

http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/gtbqldpic.jpg

once i got it home...

under the bonnet
http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/enginebay.jpg

these gauges went in a day or two after i got it, not so much for bling factor just cause it wasn't running all that well when i got it so wanted the boost gauge to help sort it out...

http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/subascan.jpg

my previous car was an my97 GX awd wagon, absolutely awesome bulletproof car, one of the best i've owned.. but slooooooowww

after a good wash and clean...
http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/interior1.jpg

the reason i drive a wagon!
http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/boot.jpg

not many mods to speak of, replaced everything that was stuffed, fixed the rusted out jap spec exhaust, got a set of dumps still to do on, water spray, major service, new slotted DBA brakes as of yesteday and sti gearnob, replaced plenty of vac lines and other bits and peices along the way, spent over 7 grand since i bought it just getting it up to scratch and insurance and all the rest... its THE most expensive car i've ever owned but i wouldn't trade it for anything

Don't listen to him Smidge - he's possesed.

That's a clean ride - and look at that virgin engine bay.

I can't even remember when my engine bay looked stock.

Marty

Just stirring.
GTB's are sh!t hot and I'd have one at the blink of an eye.
There is so much other goodness in them that the TT part is of little concern.(and easily remedied if it is of concern)

Marty
8th March 2007, 01:50 PM
yep, goodness like worn out shocks, busted CV boot, car park dings, flaking window tint, notchy gearbox and all the other goodness :D

like i've always said, whoever buys it off me is going to get a sweet deal!!! poured almost 6k into it in just over 6 months!

Hi Smidge,
I love the look of the GTB. Has the new owner of your GX done a conversion, it was the perfect conversion candidate.

Marty
5th April 2007, 12:39 AM
hmmm... don't think so! haven't heard about it or seen it... was a bargain for him in some ways, perhaps not in others needed new shocks etc..

pretty sure he's in the trade in which case he's got no issues at all, once you know how to fix stuff on these cars it never gets thaaat expensive (touch wood)

car is going great guns at the moment, just put a strut brace on it this weekend, has tidied the front up, makes it feel like you have more grib until it understeers, still progressive but you can push it that little bit further

i was sceptical it would make much of a difference but i'm liking it

Marty
9th April 2007, 04:42 PM
one of the previous owners had taken out the snorkus but not done anything about directing air to the airbox... this was remedied on the weekend...

all 90mm PVC pipe, cost stuff all

Me and a mate (aviation sheety) got busy grinding out the hole to the guard and the airbox to fit a 90deg bend snugly in... have yet to bellmouth it but will do

could be placebo effect but seems more responsive since doing it, either way the mad scientist in me says its better so thats all that matters...

here are some pics... (camera phone quality, sorry!)

also made up a little plate to cover the blank hole where the snorkus used to get air from the bay, just a concept at this stage, will probably have GT on it instead of STI but we were experimenting... can make these up for people if they want

not bad, i've got an ice creamery laminated menu covering up mine :D

Marty
27th May 2007, 11:22 PM
picked up a justjap replacement top mount IC today, went with the smaller of the two models as did smoov just to keep things simple. noticeable improvements are an extra psi of boost on the primary and the thing stays ice cold pretty much all the time, weighs twice what the stock item did so the thermal efficiancy has to be better, also the fins inside are much bigger so can flow a ton more air..

enough talk, here are the pics

http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/newicpic.jpg

and this is the mod to the braket a sheety mate of mine whipped up, doesn't really hold the IC that tight but doesn't need to, its on the good and proper! can get more of these made up if anyones interested, custom sprayed any colour in 2pak /plug

http://members.iinet.net.au/~martinm/cars/gtb/custombracket.jpg

Marty

oh and BOV pipe blocker courtesy of local hardware store in the table leg rubber department... 35mm does the trick!

smoov
27th May 2007, 11:29 PM
as previously mentioned Marty, I'm very interested in this bracket!

I'm pleased that you finally got the TMIC for a reasonable price. Good stuff!

I forgot to look and ask... How did you plug up the hole in the plastic manifold where the BOV used to feed air into? Like a crack whore, I have urges to convert my Recirculating BOV to an external venting one...must.....resist.....

and your car is looking as hawt as always :D drives well to boot!

Thats exactly what I used to plug up my BOV at one of the dyno days and on a cruise. I think it popped off about 4 times a day. I only had cable tise around it though. Very dodgy

Marty

as previously mentioned Marty, I'm very interested in this bracket!

if the bracket is just shortened and nothing else as you can see you have the reverse the bolt which is no big deal, the bracket doesn't take much load

if you wanted it to sit underneath the cooler like in stock, then its gotta be reshaped a little, i actually have a pot of paint at home of your burgandy (well, gen 3 burgandy, but very close) which i could get made up and sprayed if you're keen

used a 3/8th rubber blocker from auto1 and jammed it in upside down then clamped it, works fine!

i had a bov sitting around that i attempted to fit when i didn't have a way to block the IC pipe, took it round the block and to be honest, it sucked balls, didn't make any proper noise and was just another thing to worry about leaking, maybe with a real quality bov it would be okay

my suggestion would be to get a black 50/50 valve hybrid from GFB (about $180 direct from them...) and just install that in place of what you have and swap when you feel the urge, thats about the only bov i'd bother putting on mine for a bit of extra "LOOK AT ME THIS THING ACTUALLY IS TURBO"

and your car is looking as hawt as always :D drives well to boot!

thanks mate, only took 8 bloody months to get it that way :D

smoov
27th May 2007, 11:41 PM
if it is at all possible, could you make the bracket so that it sits underneath the cooler tab?

paint? lol, don't bother. I have some heatproof black that would do the job fine :) i don't like many colours under my bonnet :D
