Still to poor for a 6 speed, still saving got a little bit more to go.

i have been so unmotivated with my car, all the mods i want to do are just so expensive...
Knowing me you;ll ask again in 6 months time if i have gotten a 6 speed and my answer will still be....uummm no :)

All nice and low guys, one thing I have noticed is that almost all of your cars sit lower at the back.

To get them to sit level do you need to put slightly higher springs in the back?

Has anyone got a pic of their car like this?

funny you should say that. with the back lower than the front.. understeer is more pronounced. back needs to be 5mm higher than the front.. your breaking also goes to ****. because the weight doesnt transfer properly.

most people seem to put liberty lows in the front and wrx lows in the rear.. dropping the height in the rear tomuch. dunno, but looks hectic. :D

coilovers are the go.. can then set the height to what you want. a shitty side angle picture. but gives a rough idea. back is 5mm higher, handles briliantly, and is much quicker through the corners.

yeah very true, back needs to be higher than the front.... the pic was after shock rebuild, heights were all over the place, just looked good that low at the back :D best ride height for handling is about 40-50mm higher at the rear than what it was in that pic, front slightly down

What is the reasoning behind there being less understeer if you raise the back?

Mine sits significantly lower at the back due to some aftermarket springs that came on the struts. It looks gay/hektic and it scrubs and it's not good for handling. Heaps low cars suck which is why I don't mind hijacking this thread. I want to put higher ones in the back, what ride height is ideal for handling and how much higher should the back be? Just after a range, obviously there's many factors involved.

another thing to note is that the wheel arch is a bit higher on the front than the rears which can make the back look lower than the front when it really isnt..........

Marv
16th April 2007, 08:39 AM
My car is too low. It sitting on some rather expensive Buddy Club coilovers and has been raised up compared to when I bought it (when it had cut springs), but it's still too low as the bottom pic shows. Sorry for the crap quality, but I only had my phone camera at hand...

Raising it will suck BALLS, though, as I paid a not-insubstantial amount of money for a full alignment from Heasmans.

sorry, was thinking of wagons. :P
wagons are 5mm more in the rear. (weight at back)
sedans same front and rear.
330cm center to wheel arch on the front and rear.
which will allow for good roll-centers and also no bumpsteer. any lower and the steering arms start to go the wrong directiong and give you issues when turning and hitting a bump. roll centers also goes to and through the ground making the front understeer and slid as apposed to roll and grip.

doesnt look as good, but handles heaps better and is a legal height at the same time. loved it when my wagon was 20-30mm lower front and rear.. looked hot. but bottomed out a bit to much, and clearance was a biatch.

Marv
17th April 2007, 06:57 PM
Backing this up, in the sh*tty mobile phone pic I posted, you can see the axle angles down towards the diff. That's bad; it should be straight across.

Rallyeee
17th April 2007, 09:25 PM
vaccine: Mine is 334mm front and 305mm rear.

As the guards aren't dead level with each other should this really be the reference point? Or is it only meant to be level with the guards, not the ground?

Where are these figures from? Is there more info on it? Are these measurements pretty universal for each different set up of car?

naif
17th April 2007, 10:15 PM
with 330mm all round, the sill just infront of the rear wheel will be slightly higher then just behind the front wheel, BUT the guard heights will be the same

it isnt very noticable, not as much as when people have rs lows in the front and wrx lows in the rear which causes the rear wheel to be up in the guard.

this is how my wagon looked with king lows in the front and standard rs king springs in the rear, (altho all the struts are shagged more then Housten.)

I don't care if it doesn't look level. I just want to know the ideal for handling. If level is ideal then do you want the sills level or the guard gaps even?

vaccine
18th April 2007, 06:20 AM
it will mean that the edge of the tyres will be the same distance from the guard edge.and yes the front guard is higher than the rear. it has come from my own personal experience with dicking with heights and also re-confirmed from some reputable track/gravel racers.
measurements pretty much apply to all subarus up to current as they all pretty much use the same basic setup.

u guys should be careful. i had a mate whos car kept rubbing to the point where the rims were getting scrashed

Marv
18th April 2007, 08:16 PM
Yes, too much rubbing and you'll go blind.

I spoke to a suspension shop about my overall alignment (thankyou Heasmans for giving me a sheet that includes height!) and they reckon it's all a-ok for my car. I even emailed the pic of the axles across to them, but they reckon it's fine.

Methinks I need a third opinion...

I run a 330 front guard height, and a 315 rear. And it handles well. as for optimal, I can't say I've only change the height of the car at once - so I can't be certain of exact effects.

Certainly there was a massive difference from running a 300mm front and rear guard height
