View Full Version : New Just Car Insurance TPFT Policy
Hodgey

Hi All,
Not in any way associated with Just Car Insurance, but I was very impressed that someone out there in the insurance world has decided to start a policy like this.
Just Car now offer Third Party Fire and Theft and where by the car is insured for up to$10,000 in the case of a theft or fire. For $600 a year, how can a P-plater go wrong.
Sure, you're not covered if you write off your own car or if you are at fault your car won't be covered. But thats the risk you take!
I just thought I would share this with my fellow P-platers who I'm sure would feel the same pain as me whenever it comes time for the insurance bill.
Cheers
Hodgey

i sent off an online quote to just car listing ALL the mods, and never got an email/phone call back
i did an online quote with AAMI and had an email back within half hour stating they where unable to insure me due to the statistics of young drivers in modified cars, they said to contact just car(an AAMI company) who insure young drivers in modified cars.
somehow me thinks justcar didnt want to insure me

Hodgey, My insurance is $1600 for full comp, all mods listed and agreed value of $12K, with Just Cars and I am a year younger than you! For an extra thousand dollars which in modifying-your-car terms isnt a whole lot of money for that piece of mind why wouldn't you get it?! I am a strong believer of full comp.. think about all that hard work, sweat and tears and money, that you have poured into it! I'd hate to have an accident and not be covered. Third Party Fire and Theft only covers you when your car is bascially parked i.e. Theft and Fire, Why get insurance if its not going to cover you on the road?
I will go with who ever has the highest agreed value/ lowest excess.
edit: i thought it was 12k agreed, its only 9,250, didnt read insurance statement properly, whoops :P

Just called Shannons again, my quote was $1800 ($200 more expensive than just cars), but with an agreed value of $14,000 (Agreed of only $9,250 with just cars :(edited post above) which is pretty much spot on to what I have spent on this car so far including purchase price of $10,000, not including consumeables i.e services.

its good to see Just cars stepping up to the mark, even tho they still wont give you a propper pay out if your car is stolen/fire damaged, considering some done up cars are worht more than $10k to replace.
The myth shannons wont insure someone under 21 is just that, a myth. I was insured with them when i was 20 with a highly modified car, yes it was expensive, but i was insured.
I'm not going to say what's better, but i will say i'm insured with Shannons cause i think they're best for me.

If shannons is so good, then how come I was told they won't insure me!
I told them everything about the car, that I was involved in this club, and that I was a real enthusiust as I've poored 100's of hours of time on the car, and they said they wouldn't insure me.
I've got one accident in Dec 2004 on my history, I've done the Murcotts Defensive Driving Course as of June last year, and I've had a few speeding infringements here and there. I think its the combo of the one accident and speeding that cause Shannons not to insure me
Just car Full comp was gonna be $1500, shannons said they couldn't get close to that. Maybe I'll try shannons again as they offer paying by the month.

i've been ringing insurance companies for about 2 weeks now. i'm buying a RS wagon tomorrow and need to organise insurance quickly. i had a quote from just car for $1400 full comp. Vigil - $800 (but under new laws that kicked in this week wont insure anyone under 25 with a high performance car, and people under 25 will find at the end of the year they will no longer be covered by them). shannons wont touch me unless you have drived a high performance car for over 1 year. i rang famous, the best price they could do was $1900. haven't tried AAMI or RACV yet because i assume they will be even more expensive.
anyone who has any ideas please let me know as i am running out of options and need insurance tomorrow...

when i got a quote for my older beast, the girl said no one under 19, i was 18 at the time. but considering the extent of the work gone into it made them realise i was not about to go and bend it. and they would insure me. i was told they would not insure me with the RS, but i am going back very soon, with a fresh motor, new paint and all other work done and see what they say.
if still its a NO i will insure the older car first then jump in with the RS.

Dave, I know driving infringements and accidents don't look good together, but these happened a while back. Accident in 2004 and my last speeding fine Jan last year. I told this to the guy, and he still said I need to have a better history.
Sorry shannons, I'll go back in time and change my past. They're supposed to support enthusiusts. They forgot to mention they'll only cover enthusiusts with spotless records, oh and that they can't have any p-plates on the car.
Shannons seem to offer some great insurance products, but why the hell they claim to insure enthusiusts but in many circumstances (that I know of) they seem to bend around this rule and act like every other insurance company i don't know. Not wanting to put shannons down, just don't understand sometimes why companies have these big claims that they can never follow through with.
The joys of being a P-plater who's made some mistakes. lol I suppose at least I've learnt my lesson lol

hey mate $1400 is not too bad for full comp for just car depending on agreed value and the mods on the car.
i wouldnt bother with AAMI...for one reason, i rang them up and when quoting mods/alterations to the vehicle i stated "wheels, alarm" i was then cut off by them saying "we only allow one modification and cant insure it"
and same with RACV dont bother there. they quoted me $6000 full comp agreed value $8500.

Just Car / AAMI are hopeless when it comes to sorting out liability for accidents.
My only accident took 12months to sort out. I paid the excess as the other party was threatening legal action if i didn't pay, then 12 months later I received a phone call from AAMI saying the other party still hadn't claimed the accident and that they were then going to refund me the $850 excess back as no claim had been made.
The day after this, AAMI called me again saying the other party had lodged the claim, and they I should ignore the bank cheque coming in the mail.

Shannons insure my Delica - a 4WD people mover is certainly not an enthusiasts car and I am not in any car club.
Famous insured my 84 Corvette I had a while back and paid out within a week or 2 when it was stolen with no questions asked :tu
Also anyone who tells their insurance company that they have speeding fines is being a bit too honest. There is no way for the insurance company to find out this information unless you tell them. Bigger infringements like dangerous, drunk driving or loss of licence is different because if you do have an accident and it goes to court and you are found guilty then they take previous infringements into account when they decide the sentence and these are then stated at the time of the sentencing.
But insurance is a total waste of money if you want my opinion - it is basically gambling where the insurance company is the house and the house always wins. My Delica is only insured because it is under finance and has to be. I worked out a while back that my total insurance bill (house, boat, car, health etc) for 1 year was well over $5000. Thats when i cancelled them all and decided that the money I saved would cover any potential future loss.

Ken, there is a way where by insurance companies can find out if you've had speeding tickets. Its simple, they call up the customer and get them to give them a copy of their VicRoads driving history which lists all speeding tickets.
Unfortunately, in the eyes of the law, if you don't provide all the information are directly dishonestly answer questions they ask, they have every right not to cover you.

I just called Shannons and JustCar, Vigil were not open....
I was pleasantly suprised, i have a Rating 3 Record... I'm not going in to that. But i have been looking at comp. insurance cause i have the car under finance, so i have to do it... This is waht i got.
I'm 21, Rating 3.
I'm not going to go into detail about what the car is, cause thats a suprise :D
Shannons was $2154, JustCar was $1947
Excess at shannons was $900 (under 25), JustCar was $1700, $1000 for theft.
That was on a relatively low agreed value as the car is not finished yet and they need evidence of the work carried out on the car.
Shannons also has PBTM which helps me a lot as far as organising my money goes. The only gri[e they had was that it needed a garage, which can easily be arranged for me.
Im quite suprised actually, given the fact that this car is a hell of a lot newer than my RS conversions, and to comprehensively insure those it was going to cost me over $3300 a year, but that may have had a lot to do with age at that stage aswell.
So all in all im glad, the quotes i got were about $1000 or so cheaper than what i had budgeted for.

To bring this thread back up, just called Shannons, and got an awesome quote.
Quote was $1370 p.a:
- All mods listed
- $11.5 k agreed value
- $800 Excess (compared to $1650 with JCI).
They put me on Rating 2, compared to Rating 4 at JCI. I think this was because I'd completed the Murcotts Defensive Driving Course last year and Shannons recognise this course where as JCI don't.
Anyways, thanks to all those who said be persistent with Shannons, as it now paid off.

Recoil, shannons told me to go away because i needed experience with a performance car. So after a year i went back and they were going to be about $600 more expensive than JCI so i didn't bother. Hopefully next year i guess. (ps. i'm 20 at the moment).

My rate of $700 or so from JCI doesn't seem so bad now! funnily enough, it was shannons that didn't seem to want to insure me... actually, come to think of it they offered me an annual of about $1600... doesn't really make sense!

1st Call - They told me they wouldn't insure me at all due to my accident and speeding fines
2nd Call - They told me they would insure me but for a premium of $3000 p.a
3rd Call - They told me they would insure me for $1370 p.a. with an $800 Excess, and I even got my accident date wrong (I said Dec 2004 where as it was Dec 2005). So I rang them back to change the date of my recorded accident and the premium was still $1370 p.a.
Go figure!

for anyone out there that wants cheap insurance for their RS, keep trying Shannons til you get a good deal. It has worked for quite a few people I know including myself - and Hodgey has also just proven it.

CGU insurance FTW!!
23, GT Fozz, Market value of $18K + mods+accessories Rating one for life after june this year if i don't claim. $480 PA with $400 excess (down to $250 excess in june)
never had any hassles with claims (made 3 against other drivers) repairer of my choice, courtesy cars, assessed over the phone. as long as the mods are legal and roadworthy and within engineering limits they just add them to the value of the vehicle

Yeh, you win!! You told me so lol
Robb, sounds like a good insurer, but I'm guessing they won't touch me with a ten foot pole as I'm still a P-plater with a high performance car

upto $10,000 have you rang them or are you just going of there ad on TV? im pretty sure they will not give you $10,000 for a RS liberty try about $5,000. you could have a $100,000 car and they will only give you $10,000 fire and theft.
dont worrie about this i just took the time to read through this masive insurance thread.

Just spoke to CGU Rob. They said being under 25 they will not insure me in an RS Turbo! Interesting they will insure you in a Turbo Foz though considering your under 25.

SHAFTED!! maybe they don't class the fozz as a performance car??
but how stupid is it when a run of the mill V8 crapodore puts out more power than a car bhut just 'cause it's got a turbo on it means it can't be insured!! Ya should call em and ask about a bloody turbo diesel hilux!! and see what they say

Perhaps it's the other way around, Rob? Forester parts are easily sourced if you have a prang, and there's plenty of them around if yours gets stolen. So, no worries replacing your car.
An RS sedan (1/900ish) or wagon (1/110) is starting to get into real pain in the heinie territory for them.

I had the replacement thing explained to me a few years back. I had built a UC Torana with a 1UZ-FE Lexus V8, 5spd and new IRS rear-end built off an HSV Hydratrak LSD set-up.
I went cap-in-hand to Shannons as they'd previously insured my Monaro and the Torrie when it was still a 6-pot, but they knocked me back because I was only 19. Then, when I asked them about transferring the ownership to my parents, they agreed to insure it... for $6500/pa.
Their reasoning was because of all the custom work done to fit the engine, or if I spun rearwards it into a gutter and bent up the rear-end. In the end, I converted it back to stock and sold it for what I paid for it.
I had the RS insured through JCI because we deal with them through my work a lot and they gave me an agreed value of $14k, with a $1600 premium. Shannons wouldn't touch me as when I bought the car I was 23. When it came time for renewal, JCI said the max. they'd cover me for is $7000. Bah to them.
I'll be going with Shannons next...
Sorry for the essay.
