so my rear shocks we making some noise, i decided it was time to change them...

here's what i found...

http://www.martinmulholland.com/cmproductions/cars/gtb/bustedshock/DSC00046.JPG

what i didn't get was a pic of the small mound of perfect metal filings that fell out onto me when i tipped the shock

there was a little bit of tell tale squeaking but when i checked the strut mounts about 6 weeks ago there was no wear on that part so i figured it was more likely a problem with the shock itself, boy was i wrong

new shocks aren't bilsteins but **** the car is nice to drive again, so much better handling... will probly do the front too and drive it for 30,000ks then get the billies reco'd....

Jim

im wondering, how does that happen?

could it have been a loose strut bolt, then say over time from potholes, rough roads etc caused the wear? or something more serious?

im wondering, how does that happen?
from leaving the nyloc nut ontop of the strut a bit loose, a year or so of the shockie shaft chittier chattering up and down in the strut top and you get wear like that

Jarrod

im wondering, how does that happen?

I'd be saying the nut was loose, which allowed the top to move around, hey presto. [edit] missed it by that much...

Same happens when the brearings on the front break down.

RSTurbo

yep that'd do it! guess i didnt consider that coz they should never really be not tight. and for it to come undone from tight would be pretty unlikely.

Marty
25th April 2007, 09:24 PM
i know, how the fugg did it come un-done unless someone dicked with it?

the other 3 are totally fine though.... the plot thickens

i'm actually curious as to how shagged the billies actually are?

the rear is MUCH stiffer and i have hardly any understeer now is what i noticed

also that front end (original billies) boucnes up and down over speed humps while the new shocks in the rear just take it

Well that one certainly needs a new insert. Not cheap I'm afraid.

80 bucks for the rod... $300 per rebuild -- per shock! >shock<

:D

Smidge, try Heasmans. I know I got a rebuild for my E30 BMW's Bilstein Sprints priced up through them (as they're the Bilstein distributor for Oz) for A LOT less than $300/corner and we're talking 300,000km-old totally shagged out dampers.

Smidge, try Heasmans.

thats where i got the quote.... :( either the parts cost a motza or they don't really want the work

Marv

A full set of Billie Sprints shouldn't cost more than $1000-$1100. And I'd highly, HIGHLY recommend those socks over just about anything else out there ('cept some Aragostas/Ohlins/Sachs).

very unusual that it would come undone. who was the last to fiddle with your suspension?

P.S. macro is your friend

That's nasty stuff - I had the suspension changed over as part of the purchase deal - she was from a dealer and was fitted with Cusco suspension which was completely shot - whole front end would shake at idle! I bought the billy's and they fitted it for me - can only guess that they didn't tighten the rear! I guess they can work loose but that takes the cake. BTW Billsy bought the Cusco suspension - we had it overhauled then sent it down to him. Hope they're still going strong for you Billsy!

interesting to get some history...

I'm seeing all my old threads dug up! :D

yeah the back was well and truly rooted, i changed them because i thought they were doing the billy rattle of death but i wa a bit surprised to find them how they were

anyway, has brand spankers shocks in the back and is going strong - new strut tops too obviously

smoov

tell me more about this "billy rattle of death"...

Marty
26th June 2007, 10:04 AM
when they get old the bearings in them get rooted and then they rattle

heasmans on princes highway will sort you out if you have any issues smoooooooov

smoov
26th June 2007, 10:51 PM
how much are we talking here smidgeroo? does this require a full strut rebuild?

Marty
26th June 2007, 11:39 PM
covered this somewhere else i think... you'll find threads with me bitching about it somewhere

$270 per shock if you take them the unit

a bit over $300 if you get them to do it for you

an extra $80 if the shafts are rooted like mine were
