Went to WSID tonight. Had a great night, but only got 3 runs because 200 cars showed up and they had to turn people away.
So my three runs went like this:
1. Forget to hit record on video camera in car :( Rev to 6000, drop the clutch, spin the sh!t out of the tyres, then roll up to the start line:D Yes, that was on the warmup pad :P:P
Rev to 6000, lights go green, slowly let foot off (well not too slowly, it gripped hard) and off I go.
13.09@105.1mph
1.92 - 60'
Forget to hit record on video camera in car :(
2. Hit record and it doesn't work :( Do same deal on the pad, but let it drop real hard at 7k, nice bit of spinnage.
Rev to 7k, bounce off limiter, drop it like its hawt! Thing grips like a mofo and off I go. But still crap 60'
12.98@106.2mph
1.90 - 60'
3. Hit record, it works. Same on pad, only bouncing off limiter a bit more
Get to line, drop it at 6k but it bogs down real bad, still manage same 60' as before
13.21@104.8mph
1.87 - 60'
My car runs like sh!t at the moment.
Injectors hit 100% duty at 5000rpm,
car loses boost from 19psi at 5000rpm down to 15psi
feels plain dead at anything above 5000rpm.
Its time to do the following:
parallel rails with sard FPR
650cc injectors
tune my power FC (currently running base map).
Cheers to derek, luke, joel and jen for coming out to watch.
Had a great time and I am hellakeen to get back out there, hopefully with waaayyy less cars
PS. luke's car is teh pawn. it rox0r's my s0xor's. wwwhhhhhhoooooooooossssssssshhhhhhhh tfff ttffff tfffff
PPS. Sorry I couldn't run ya, I am not into that kind of thing :P

I also chatted to the owner of 4ZENUF. Sounds like that car is insanely quick, evade kind of material.
chris - details on your car?
gearbox, diffs, tyres, clutch????
I don't understand why you are only getting 1.9 60' in a 4wd car which is launching off the limiter...
I managed a 1.9 60' in my old S14 with obvious wheel spin.
also, how come you were able to get a 1.8 when the car bogged down and a 1.9 when it took off with grip and boost?
just interested.
thanks

nah I got it wrong, it bogged down a bit and I got 1.88
Mods =
td05
PPG 1-4 straight synchro with 3.9 ratios. stock diffs
powerFC with base map
avcr at 19psi (dropping off to 15psi ???)
FMIC
3” TBE
lotsa suspension bits to help
16x7” rexy rims. Street tyres
I got NFI either. Even when I dropped it at 6500 and got a good clean launch (the 2nd run) I still only got 1.9.
What should I have got for this type of launch?
What speed would you be at at the 60’ mark? Would you be in high 1st gear? Any idea on rpm in first?
Does it have something to do with the 3.9 ratio box/diff?

Good work, Chris.
Did you drop the pressures in the tyres or do any kind of prep to the car?
What's the clutch you're running?
Did this thread help you at all?
http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64995&highlight=launch+recipe
I see.. I was either thinking, to launch at those sort of revs, he either..
stole it
has a spare box and tools in his mates car in the parking lot
or it's a built one.. :)
I never raced my RS when I had it, and the S14 gearing is very different
I managed a 13.8 on a standardish S14 with heavy wheels.
I crossed the 400m marker as it just hit the rev limiter in 3rd (6900rpm)
the 1.9 60' I got was with 17x9 rims using Bridgestone Potenza something or other 255's at the rear with 19psi in them.
Stock clutch
stock turbo
4000rpm and a fast release of the clutch (not side step) reeled off this 60' for me.
well done on your times..
there is definitely room for improvement there on the launch for you.
I would have thought that those mods you have should have you somewhere in the 180awkw region.
with confidence in the box and clutch, I'd be thinking you'd get 1.7 in there..

I'd say you could probably drive TT and thats why you got a nice 60' footer RWD. The tracks grippy so you really should be getting good ones in powerful RWD cars. Anyway from numerous discussions with the experts it seems pure power = faster 60 footers with AWD... obviously the amount of power you can make in first (when you launch) comes down to turbo sizing and setup - bigger turbos (>GT30s) might struggle to get lower 60 footer times (~1.5s) unless you can stall it up, Sam did a 1.6X with a TD05H-20G... impressive. You're probably on the limit there for an AWD Subaru with a TD05 @ 19~15psi - 1.8 is a nice effort. Keep the boost flat and sort the tune and hurry up and do another one :)
106 mph is about 150 kw atw in the real "physics" world and your 12.8 is spot on. Nice.

Into the 12s well done, I think it'll be a while til I get there. How come you're just dropping the clutch at high rpm? You can get off the line quicker by pulling on the handbrake and stalling it up.
What clutch are you using?
christuffa

What do I do with the handbrake?
bazza, thanks for the link
The trye pressures were left at about 35psi, just wanted to see how fast it was for everyday use.
Clutch is a 2600lb ceramic exedy HD. Nothin special here.
I think the biggest problem is the launch, then the top end. I will need to find a nice private stretch of the M2 and practice the launch :D
The top end is weaker than an ants dick. Absolutely **** all above 5000rpm. If i had more runs I would have tried out shifting earlier. Top of 4th was weak for about 2 secs before finish line.
Video to come tonight

The car will launch better if you load it up because it will be on boost. Just free reving the car with the clutch in won't produce much boost.
To load it up you need to hold the revs up and let the clutch out a bit so it slips. You pull the handbrake on so it doesn't roll forward when you do this and break the beams. You release the clutch and handbrake simultaneously and floor it.
I want to get to the drags soon (not in the next two weeks though). Let me know if you're going down again.

Nice, i'd be stoked if my car ran 12's... Especially if i knew there was more in it. The handbrake style launch is also a bit softer on drivetrain since there's not a massive shock, doesn't really matter if you've got ppg though.
I take it you're running stock RS closed deck block? Good work mate.

Last time I found that lining up next to a Nissan Skyline R33 GTR was enough to drop the 60' footer into the 1.8's and was the first time I cracked a 12 :P

yea, was fairly impressed with that 12.98 run , the car u were racing at the time is my mechanics car (1ggte powered celica, green, grim performance stickers) he was a little sheepish comin back into the marshallin area with me laughing at him because his 300kw atw "weapon" that will "leave any rs for dead" only just piffed christuffa by .5 of a second and it was on nos! ha! well it does have some issues but pffffffffffft, congrats christuffa , gud to c the car runnin , i'll be ther next week if turbo comes in time... love bein in the crowd wen someone says that the rs turbo is slow, then it reels off a 12s pass, gold! their rat tails practically shrank!

That guy i was talkin to after that run. He did a 12.24, said he normally runs a 12 flat. Looked good tho. But whats with the training wheel on the front? Its not that much of a race car!

Thanks Raz...how much is it gonna cost me? lol
thanks freak. Next time out I want to get alot more runs, I have been practicing my launches with the handbrake. Next time Luke and Derek will be going with their 270kw monsters, so I will have to try hard to keep up.
PS. Using the handbrake to preload the engine and build boost, how much should I let out the clutch? Just a tiny little bit til it starts to want to move forward?
Also, should my ceramic exedy HD smell like **** for about 15mins after doing this?

I'm no expert and my Rs has about half the power of yours, but if i get a good launch the clutch only stinks for a minute or two. As soon as it wants to move forward you can drop the handbrake. Try not to slip the clutch with the handbrake on for any period of time or yeh stinky clutch. Should almost be instantaneous.
Raz
9th May 2007, 10:53 AM
Clutch smell will depend on the material that it is made from.
In any case chris the actual "slip" or "preload" time should be quite short. A second or 2.
I find the bite point when in stage. Then disengaged the clutch. Bring up the revs and as then reengage the clutch just that bit again as the tree starts to fall. Then go on the last yellow. It all comes down to feel and individual setups tho.
