Guys and girls,
Just done a **** load of work to a customers RS - new ECU, brake upgrade, turbo timer, etc... The boys in blue pinned him for noisey exhaust (no surprise) and painted calipers! Yes you did just read that, PAINTED CALIPERS!!!! Ironic, especially since 4 pots are an upgrade and come in red from the factory!?!?!?! My delima is I can refit his old fronts, but rears have been painted to suit (RED). If someone had a set of rear calipres for an AUS delivered RS 11/91 that I could borrow for 1 - 2 weeks (just to get cleared with police) I would be a very happy man! I know this belongs in the "Wanted" section but I'm feeling lucky so spread the word! I want to nip this one in the bud soon so no questions are asked about any other mods...ecu!

Only thing I can think of is a possible fire hazard..... unless the pads where red aswell.
Shouldnt be an issue as they would have been done with caliper paint or engine enamel anyway. Fair enough if it was just house paint though :P.... but I guess there is no way for a copper to tell the difference.
I have a set here if you need but Im sure you will find some closer to you.

i find it hard to believe they can defect for painting a metal part ?? the heat loss characteristics would not be changed to a point where it would really be measurable on a street car.. what drugs are they on??
Vic coppers... what can i say?? i was once defected by a cop in my 1st car. an old holden, pulled over in burke st, defected for stereo protruding too far from dash (pull out unit handle..?) speakers not secured, and the best of all, only 3 mud flaps...
the idiot wrote the wrong rego number on the defect notice, so i ignored it and drove back to canberra... that was 1991.. sounds like not much has changed..

Fix the zorst.
Ignore/Challange the brake issue. I cannot find any rule stating otherwise in the any of the VicRoads literature.

Raz, There's been much speculation about the actual law on the whole painting calipers issue. I would however contend as you have with regard to the fact that the calipers came that colour as standard, and therefore how can you be defected for a standard item.
I've just spent the last 2-3mins searching for something to back up this claim that you're not allowed to paint your calipers, and all that I've found so far is hear say. There is nothing on the vicroads website at all and I could not find in any legislation that outlined the criteria for painting calipers.
Without delving into the legalities too much, if VicRoads have not provided sufficient access to the information on painting callipers, then they cannot defect your vehicle as you had no knowledge that the brakes were actually defective items.
However, as Richard pointed out, if you contend one thing (i.e. the brakes), it might incline the police to look further into the car (i.e. discovering all the other little goodies).
I checked this morning with a mate Rich, and unforunately he just got rid of his rear 2 pots from his WRX half cut. No-one wanted them so they went to the tip a week ago! Sorry mate

What an absolute load of crap!!! (Not the story but the issuing officer)
Sorry but it is! You cannot defect someone for painted calipers. The cop who did it must be a farken idiot! All it takes is a phone call to the traffic management sargeant and he'll get his arse kicked. Raising defects for "items" that are not defectable is a disciplinary offence. There is no excuse for it. Believe me, I know.
The only people that can "defect" the car is VicRoads. The statutes of painting calipers does not fall under police management.
Get the exhaust fixed and mail the caliper issue into his Local Area Command with a strong letter explaining that you have conformed to the righteous defect notice but am disgraced at the other. You will get a phonecall from the boss the same day he reads it :)
Cheers,
Craig
