View Full Version : Introducing.. MY00 Outback GT STi

Hey Guys,
Bit of background first :)
I started with the subarus in about 2004 i think it was when i built my first RS conversion, then again in 2005 i built another after an old woman hit me.
That one then sadly left us, and i was left with a heap of parts which i sold off and left our shores to snowboard in Japan for a couple of weeks, and it was on this trip that i decided i was going to use a 3GEN outback for my next build, and make it into something VERY different.
Upon my arrival, about a week after i got home i spotted it. For sale in newcastle was the base of what i wanted. A white outback which had the 2 tone painted white (not hte same colour as the body, whoever did the paint)
The front bar was munted, tears in it and paint missing, there was paint missing on most parts of the outback kit and the car in general didn't look fantastic.
I purcahsed the car knowing full well waht was happening to it in the weeks to follow. I had been speaking to Al at AMauto about an engine and driveline conversion and it was decided that V3 STi front to rear was the go, given my budget.
So this is the list at this stage:

The car drove reasonably well, but i wasn't happy with how it looked, ghetto front bar and all. So about a year later, the car has recently come back once again from the amauto.com.au workshop, with the new FMIC setup, parallel rails and a bit of paintwork, and i am more than happy with the results.

Big thanks to Al and Miles at AMauto.com.au for their knowledge and understanding and incredilbe standard of workmanship. Its now up to me to tidy up the engine bay a bit. Al has been awesome through the whole process of modifying this car to what it is today.
Update 27th Nov 08:
FINALLY had a win with the repair company after i was hit by yet another woman coming out of a stop/give way sign.
They repaired it, and facelifted it, but neglected to put the matching front bar on. In which case i borrowed a mates facelifted outback for the day and swapped the bars over to make sure, as i was quite certain i was being bullsh*tted to, and i found out that i was.
Along with that, i went for a full body respray, as half of it was being done anyway, and had all the rust removed and thus the bottom half re-colour coded. What a difference fresh paint makes.
So after sorting that out, here it is.

Again, Thanks to Al, adding to the list i'd like to thank Mickey and Anthony, and Marshy at Autocraft in Newcastle.

Gonna give it a wash and bit of a polish up over the next couple of days or so, paint a few bits here and there to tidy her up, re spray the manifold and give the interior a damn good clean up. haha.
Then come and see me about some better photos. :D

Tidy job as always Al :tu
Until you know what actually happened don't go assuming i was driving like a tool.
It's not the case, sure it was my fault, but was not driving erratically at all.
In syaing that, i've been taking care, it got a few squirts here and there on the highway home. Runs really well. Drove well. I got used to the clutch in the end! HAHA oh dear. Going from a 1986 Mitsubishi Colt to one of these isn't the easiest thing to do :P

Very nice car mate. Would be great fun to drive, especially after the Colt haha. V3 with DCCD?
You are obligated to post more pics once you clean it up and paint stuff. Let us know how you go painting the manifold too.

This car looks cool. The Outback flares with lowering and big wheels works really well.
Definitely an option for peeps looking for a later model Liberty. Outbacks are way more common on the 2nd hand market(up here anyway).

Very nice car mate!
The wheels suit it. BUT....these wheels are wayy to common on Subaru's these days! But haven't seen them on any other car?
Post up more pics when ya can!

the moulds on a normal outback look arse but i very much like the resprayed look! looks phat... big mix up of audm and jdm happening there :D
any particular purpose for the power steering cooler? i'm liking that idea after my recent experiences
gradg
13th May 2007, 10:22 PM
the wheels are staying, they grew on me quite quickly and with a new set of tyres im not looking at getting rid of them any time soon. I've seen them on a BA XR6 falcon, haven't noticed them on too many Subaru's but im not particularly worried about that.
The cooler was put there to stop the heat wreakign havoc on too many power steering pumps. The tomei headers generating a bit more heat (unshielded, just heat wrapped) and al had experienced pumps breaking down due to the heat in the fluid from the resonant head from all things hot in the engine bay :P Its a safety thing for my pump pretty much, so i dont start posting up a WTB thread every week for another one :D

fwoarrr!
I had a feeling you had a gen3, but you just blew me out of the water...
I like it! Colour is great, and colourcoding FTMFW.
I'm a chrome convert, so I'm not exactly a fan of the wheels...but they're growing on me. I must say....damn that car of yours gee reminds me of my old car sooo much. (that's a good thing!)
I love it. Two thumbs up!

May I say that the EJ25 that came out is VERY happy in it's new home and runs like a gem.
Thanks gradg. Thanks Al.

Man, you must have read my mind... then actually carried it out! I was talking about this with Deefa about 6 months ago... nice work!
Almost looks like the rims need 5mm spacers to fill the guards a little more... oh, and I reckon those front bars would look sweet cut out for a front mount

13th May 2007, 11:20 PM
I don't think you should sell the wheels, you should burn them and then steal smoov's wheels.
How's it go compared to your old wagon? Does it feel heavier, are they even much heavier than a Gen 1 Lib?
Great to see something different, it looks good and I'm sure the sounds and acceleration will turn some heads as it still looks reasonably family wagon spec.
Any plans for suspension upgrades or is that not really what you're doing with it?
dtrally
14th May 2007, 12:45 AM
Once you de-lift the body what are the differences with the Outback and a normal gen3? Is it just the flares?
Tell me more about this exhaust valve thingy.
gradg
14th May 2007, 09:02 AM
there are a lot of differences as far as suspension and what needs to be done, i think Al is best left to describe what happens there.
As far as upgrades go...
I'm not touching it for quite a while. I went with the V3 STi because everything that i did with my old car (apart from forgies) is all there. FMIC maybe, but its a long way off.
I will be leaving it as is for quite a while. Its running at 16psi and its a fairly strong feeling. I will spend a bit of money on swaybars and strut brace if i can find one that fits and i think that will improve the handiling a great deal, it doesn't handle as well as my old one, but the old one had coilovers and strut braces etc.
The valve in the exhaust works a lot like the butterfly in the throttle body, only the opposite. It is horizontal (when open) and when the level is pulled it closes, dampening the noise, seems to only do anything when fully closed, but even then there is a gap around the butterfly obviously to keep a bit of airflow going.
Wheels stay. If i spend any money it will be on suspension. aside from that, theyre growing on me, and in my eyes suit the car quite well. I was never into big chromies on subarus, but these ones i don't think look too bad, but thats just my opinion, i put hte photos up and of course am open to criticism :) They came with the car, and i dont have the spare cash, so they stay until some 4GEN sti rims come my way. haha.
Marv
14th May 2007, 09:19 AM
'Tis beaut. How much work is involved in the "de-lifting"?
I don't mind the design of the wheels, but I just can't cop what heavy wheels do to suspension and brakes. Not that my opinion matters a jot.
Hope you don't miss the Colt too much... :P

nice i like the outback pumped guards. thumps up
gradg
14th May 2007, 08:46 PM
Thanks for all the comments fellas.
Interior pics will come once it gets a damn good clean.
The pumped guards on the outback were what it got me thinking in the first place, its something different.
Mickey - there's a story behind the wing. I bought one, it was even white. Then i called a certain subaru parts dealer, and they told me they had a complete 3GEN GTB tailgate. Including wing, garnish, the lot. So i sold the wing to DAL-11B. Al went to pick up the tailgate and it was for a 2GEN. So im pretty pissed about it. But life goes on.
the intake manifold is coming off (im PLANNING) in two weeks. Hoping to get to the SC cruise this w/e. And it will be repainted, and a few other bits in there painted and tidied up a little to get it looking a little more presentable. The frontbar will come off too and get sent away to be repainted and i will be well on my way to be even more happy with the car.
Once i sort out how to set the boost properly on the ID3 i will be sorted too. It's pulling REALLY hard, but i think once the boost is controlled properly it may squeeze a bit more oomph out of it, at least that was the case i found with the AVCR in my mates forester

A: Being chopped by a dumped granpa Outback.

Big secret? Hmmm, not so much, i wanted to keep the idea as original as possible. I didn't want to do a big write up about "what should i do now???".
I spoke to Al and made decisions on what he thought would go well, and what was available. I'm ever so glad that it was V3 :D
Only problem now is the outback tacho only goes to 7k....
V3 redline is 8500. haha.
I've been doing quite a bit of driving and it seems the subteltly of the idea is paying off. Whihc im more than happy about :D
Thanks for all the positive commetns fellas. Looking forward to getting it cleaned up over the coming weeks and getting some nice photos up.

Looks tough! I have been toying with colour coding my OB for some time now, but after I got signage it looks like it will have to wait!
What was involved with lowering it? I have the self levelling rear struts, so apparently I need to switch to normal Liberty struts?
What about de-lifting the body?
Post some clearer pics! :)
Al [RSLC]
16th May 2007, 12:26 PM
To delift it you need struts, steering linkage, croosmember bolts front and rear, tailshaft(different centre bearing carrier) and rear bump stops from a liberty. I do not recommend lowering it without de lifting it, it is not a good idea at all.

Select monitor begs to differ D Gen. It is ~8300 according to it. Probably varies according to how frantic the engine accelleration is though.
No I didn't find this out on your car Graham. :)

17th May 2007, 03:26 PM
Ahhhh, I'm only going by what is says on the cluster, hits the red at 7,900 but I've taken mine well past that (before I did a big end) & it never seemed to bother it, I rarely go over 7,000 now as it hits peak torque at 4,000

Yes pump failure is common on gen 3 NA's. Replace oil every ~25k and fit a small finned cooler and it should be fine.

As flattering as that really is, i don't know that i could actually accept it. The car needs a bit of love, and with that, it will be a very tidy example of a unique conversion. As far as i am concerned there are far tidier conversions than this in 1 and 2gen models. Never the less, i do appreciate the comment :)

duak range is IN the gearbox, theres no external transfer case like a larger 4x4

No dual range, its running the STi gearbox, the exhaust valve control is now in place where the dual range shifter was.
Im keeping the towbar.... maybe one day, hoping of course it doesn't, it will punch through the radiator of whoever it is riding up my butt in traffic... haha

Looks awesome dude.
Now for some wagon rear seats to match those fronts, and some door trims (sedan trims will fit all doors)
And a wagon wing :p

If i could locate any of these parts i'd buy them in a heartbeat :P
Thanks for the comments fellas. Appreciated. Its taken me a year just to get that bloody paintwork done, so it feels great to get it finally painted. Now for a couple of dints to be popped out and some bits and pieces here and there.
Brembos will not be happening. I know the rims make the 4pots look small as, and even as important as brakes are, i just cannot justify $2500 for them.

This is just a matter of finding the crossbars to suit, as i need the rails to house a bike carrier, in the process of tracking them down as im pretty sure theyre not the same as the AUDM cross bars. got a set of GTB rails sitting here waiting :D

Appreciate that Ben, cheers, although its a big call with some of the 3GEN showcars getting about!
I had a look at those rails the other day too, seems theres a little shelf they latch on to, so the std bars MAY fit?
Keep me posted via pm with whatchoo got.
