Gday all,
Firstly, Im Tom from Melbourne. Ive liked Libs for some time now but just havnt been able to get into the drivers seat and actually own one. Hoping to change that soon!
Now for a couple of Q's. A mate back in my school days had what ive now found out is a Legacy GT (i think) sitting in his yard for a few years. I mentioned it to him recently and he said its still there so im looking into buying it, getting it back on the road and using it as my daily. My current daily is an old BMW 2002 (old boxy thing built in 1974!) which is fairly fun to drive but id like something a bit more modern to fall back on.
Anyway, as its been sitting for a few years now, i know it will need some work to get it road worthy again. Firstly what do you guys think is a good price to pay for it? He started out wanting 4k but i walked away and hes now come back with 2.5k a month later. The details i can remember are it is a grey market import, 176k km's, auto :(, sunroof, and some other GT things like the leather MOMO wheel. It has a larger turbo on it currently but it wasnt running well with it. He has the original around somewhere. Has aftermarket coils too and the gearbox was recently rebuilt. I havnt enquired too much about SH and any other details because as i heard 4k, it was well out of my range and i didnt bother. Pics can probably do more explaining than i can.

What things apart from the fluids will i need to look at. Im assuming the brakes will need some work for starters and maybe some suspension bushings. What else should i budget for?
Thanks for any help at all. Ive been doing a fair bit of reading around the net but im still a complete n00b when it comes to Subarus. Looking forward to going on some cruises if i get it!
Best,
Tom

Firstly welcome mate, that leggy looks like a steal for 2.5k!
Providing it runs pretty well you should be fine, maybe budget for a manual conversion though?

WOW, thats a fairly decent looking G1S1 Legacy there. Love the colour! Bit of a cut and polish, clean up the interior sort out the engine and start grinning at the $2.5K price you paid for it! :D
Look forward to seeing/hearing what you end up doing.
Welcome aboard Tom!

Thanks for the welcome scrim, the manual conversion would be great! Ill use the search to find out what cars to grab the parts off but im assuming a WRX, RS or GT? I would do the labor so that would save me a bit.

Welcome.
Check THOROUGHLY for rust. Around the windows, sills, bottom of guards, etc.

Yep, you should be able to pick up a early wrx (GC8) 4.11 manual gearbox for around a grand in good condition. You may also need a new diff and shaft. You will also have to budget for a few more bits and pieces (clutch assembly etc)
Alternatively you could probably find a cheap 3.9 RS gearbox but these generally have upwards of 200,000 kms and IMO you'd be better of budgeting for a decent box straight up.

The body looks to be in pretty good shape apart from that ding in the drivers door. Maybe a paintless dent removal job could fix that up. I couldnt spot any rust either which is fantastic. The paint hasnt suffered at all from what i could see either. Any idea what the colour is? "Subaru Blue"? haha. Thanks for the welcome :D

its definitely going to be a bit of work to get it going
2.5k is probably fair as its thats probly the worth of it with the sum of its parts
i'd be doubling that budget to get it on the road again and thats if you do most of the work yourself, if you have to pay mechanics etc then its going to cost a fair whack more
good luck! blue is tops

Marv, will do mate. Ill go back with a friend/mechanic so he can check it out and give me his opinion, grab some more pics and have a search around for that rust.
Smidge, not the news i wanted to hear bit im glad i heard it anyway! The way im trying to look at it is if i get into trouble and end up having to sell again, i can part it or sell it for roughly what i bought it for. Im also turboing my BM at the moment so hopefully i dont get too many projects on my plate at once, im sure some of you fellas know what i mean!

Thanks mate :D... I think it is a sticker but honestly not sure if it come from the factory or what. The current owner doesnt seem like the type to put a sticker on it. Maybe its a Legacy thing?

Hello.
I have a GX with a legacy conversion. TD05 and Vos chip are the only mods at the mo. Have been browsing for a while but can't post, a mate tells me the reason is I haven't posted in one of these threads.

Anymore words of wisdom/things to look out for from RSLC before i head back to check this out?

Bit of a noob question - do i need to be wary of the noisey lifter issues that you get with the RS's which havent had the WRX head done? After searching ive pretty much concluded that it wasnt really an issue on the JDM cars. Can someone please confirm this for me? It just seems a bit odd as arent they pretty much the same motor?

It's not a standard thing (well it's not in mine, nor any others i've seen), looks like a sticker that has been added. Looks ok, either way. :)

Nosiy lifters are (99% of the time) just that - noisy. G1S1 legacy body parts are reasonably rare, especially in decent nick. You shouldn't have much trouble getting the money or close to it in parts if it came to that. Check the sunroof as well for leaks/rust

Thought id give a little update. Basically the car needed a bit too much work for me to realisticly use it as a daily - I passed it up at $500 and let my mechanic and good friend have it as he can do all the work required himself. Hes now pretty much got it back on the road. I know you will all say "What you let it go for 500 bucks!?" and i know it was a steal at that price but i just dont have the time to tinker around with it right now.
I ended up buying an RS advertised on RSLC so i look forward to meeting the Melbourne members at a cruise some time. Really enjoying the car so far.
