Hi my name is Josh and I am posting from Canada. This seems like a great forum, lots of info here. Not much for first gen Legacy's up here in North America.

I have a 92 Legacy Touring Wagon which I think you would call a Liberty GT? Got a closed deck EJ22T with no intercooler and I picked it up for $850CAD :D

Hey mate. Yeah that's similar to our Legacy GT's but it appears that yours has a flat roof all the way through? Most down here the roof raises up near the front doors, and ours only come with an ej20t, Although they are intercooler.

What's your plans for this car?

Yes it has a flat roof from front to back. Sadly the turbo wagons here only came automatic so I need to swap it out. I have bought a lot of stuff for it so far and this summer I plan on doing a lot to it.

So far I have...

3" turbo back with high flow cat, resonator and Blitz Nur Spec R muffler :D

Timing belt, idlers and tensioner. timing belt covers, water pump, oil pump seals, valve cover gaskets, cam seals, plugs, wires, drive belts

heat wrapped exhaust manifold with egt sensor bung added

tube with fittings added to remove the intake resonator box and the snorkel removed from the fender

put new brakes on it

H&R lowering spings

trailing arms and lateral links off a 93 wrx to replace the stamped rear lateral arm with the rod type swaybar endlink

My list of things I am buying still

KYB AGX struts
whiteline front and rear sway bars
whiteline anti lift kit
front and rear strut tower braces
camber kit
sti upper spring perches/mounts

wrx lightweight flywheel with oem clutch
5spd transmission

Top shelf, where abouts in the great white are you located? I look for ages to find one over there, only one in FSJ and the woman refused to sell it to me!

Ninja edit:
Arent these cable clutch instead of hyd?

I am in Toronto Ontario area. The legacys turbo's we got here used a pull type hydro clutch. They also used 3.90 gearing. When I said wrx I meant a GD wrx since we never got GC wrx's. The only turbo legacy's we got were the first gens, after that we went turboless to 2005 i think and no turbo impreza's untill 2002

Nice wagon mate. Like the motor it comes with.

How come no cooler?

I will be putting a awic cooler on when i replace the turbo. I don't know if the ones you guys get have a VF11 turbo or not but the VF11 we got in north america has a really odd outlet size and angle. Its roughly on a 70* angle, plus that vf11 is really really small. Stock is 8.7PSI but it can't even hold that in upper rpm range. Only good thing with that turbo is full boost by 1800rpms :D

Probably wouldn't need an intercooler in the canadian winter haha :D

Josh222

In the winter it would probably be fine. Where I live it gets over 30C in the summer with high humidity feeling up to 40+ some days. When I finish fixing it up and replacing the worn out suspension parts I will get to power mods.

Car looks good, I love Legacys in black. Looks like you got the right idea as far as mods go

Can't speak for Canada, but the raised roof Legacys are pretty rare in the US, only some of the 94s had it, I assume Canada is the same.

The North American Legacys didn't come intercooled :(

Nice ride! Would be interesting to compare the 2.2, with a td04/05 and a front mount..

Welcome aboard!

The flatlined roof is definitely an oddity! I like it!

Keep up the good work... You're making some positive progress so far on what appears to be a really neat Legacy!

Cheers

A little update, there was a banging sound coming out of the bell housing area so I decided to pull out the motor and transmission to fix the banging problem and do some mods and maintenance.

It is possible to stick DOHC heads on it, what you think the 22B STi was :D but I would need a parts motor to do it.

I would need the intake manifold with the right pcv system, heads, coolant crossover pipe, coolant hardline pipes that go over the motor, all the timing covers, the mount the from the head for the exhaust manifold. Pretty much swap everything but the short block.

The SOHC heads do limit power a fair bit but they do give this thing great low end grunt.

I am about 10 minutes away from the Pearson airport. There is a pretty good Subaru community in the Toronto area.

Nice mate,

I've been on the hunt for a decent Gen 2 turbo in Canada but there seems to be a real shortage of subarus!

Let me know if you see anything in BC or Alberta. :tu

you in BC at the moment dave?

i'm on vancouver island currently

Dave, you'd be hard pressed to find ANY gen 2 turbos in North America. They did them in gen 1, but not that I know of for gen 2 - I've never seen one at least. Lots with hood scoops, if that makes you feel better? ;)

The GT with the hood scoop is normally a 2.5na.

If you were desperate for one, some of the importers are probably starting to get them in from Japan, as Canada has a solid 15 year rule on imports, so anything up to 1996 is now importable. Cos of the freight you'll be looking at minimum $6-8k though, more likely $10k, which in this world of cheap cars is hard to take.

Unless you meant gen 1 series 2?

Gen 1's are all buckets now :P

I'll be looking to get something N/A or T when I go over, and want a wagon to throw the snowboard in the back.

Jaz, we should chat more about Canada :tu

Geach I will be having beers in 3 months, as long as you don't mind blood in your beer :P

Fo'shizzle, although I'm back in Australia in April, so we may be tag teaming D.

I'd actually suggest getting yourself some sort of 4x4 - we got a 4Runner and absolutely loved it, as there's so many back roads and camping spots you can get too, plus for the 4 months of the year when the weather sucks you can laugh your ass off at all the folks in their low cars

Added to that, 4Runners are (comparitively to Australia) cheap as chips and there's thousands of them around, so parts are easy to come by.

You wouldn't think it, but Subaru's are fairly rare over here. Yes, there's a few around, but they are nowhere near as popular as in Australia or south of the border in the US. I would have expected to find the outback to be really popular, but it's tough to find a good used one.

I think it has alot to do with the location, im up here in Northern Alberta and the outback is pretty much the only choice you have second hand!
Though one thing i noticed, if i were to buy some thing cheap to replace the out back is that in Edmonton there seems to be quite a few GC8 RS's, the ej25 powered 2 doors, they already come with the STI front ends, perfect for conversion!

And i must say im proud that my girlfriend and i pulled a little corolla out of a snow drift in down town GP the other day using nothing but a snatch strap and Outback powaaaah!

Jaz

Powaaaah!

Have you seen the "Outback" GC8 wagons? Freaks! Oh, and the Outback Sedans... weird.

Interesting that there's more outbacks out there. I would have figured granola-crunching-hippy-ville Vancouver would have attracted more than it does though!

Yeah ive seen a few gen 3 outback sedans, crazy looking things, and a couple of Baja's too.
So when my outback wouldnt start and i got tired of trying to fix it with frozen fingers i took it to Subaru here in Grande Prarie. Turns out the water pump had seized, i was quoted $1600 to fix and 2 week wait on parts.
Apparently Subaru canada doesnt have any parts on hand aside from consumables :S
So i just bought a second outback and used the bits haha

BAJAsses...

Oh to have the space! I'm heading home to Aus in April and am so looking forward to having a garage again! Vancouver's a bit tighter on space than up norf apparently... I changed the water pump on my truck in our parkade - coolant leaking down three floors = whoops! Didn't get a fine though :)

I'm looking into getting a Foz or Outback - really want something to go camping/snowboarding in but also have some comfort.

Budget is around 6K which should be enough from having a look at craigslist. I keep getting varying reports on insurance though, what are you paying recol? Full comp?

BJM
1st February 2011, 01:59 PM
They tear you a new arse for full comp if you aren't a Canuck. Well they did when we were in Alberta...

My insurance quote wasnt too bad, $350 for 3 months with out any NBC considered.
If you can get an Aussie insurance agent to state you hold a certain level of NCB you can get a discount, at least through ICBC in BC.
Also Kijiji.ca is your friend for buying a car...
