View Full Version : Techworkz Project 2JZ - " The Troll "

Howdy Gents,

I know some of you guys are into old school retro stuff, so thought I might share this one.

After moving on from the RS, I thought I might move into the 6cyl ballpark for a bit, and came across this neat project I couldn't pass up.

1988 Toyota MX73 Cressida, currently fitted with a 7MGTE Turbo donk and driveline from a MA70 Supra. R154 gearbag.

It came with engineer's papers for the conversion, and the conversion had been done quite well. The engine had a massive oil leak, and big end knock, but I managed to get it for $1,700. On 16psi it does pretty decent skids.

Was originally planning to try source another 7M block, and keep going with this setup for a bit. But they virtually don't exist these days, so it's going in the bin in the favour of a 2JZ GTE.

Plan is to get a 2J from Al in the next month or 2, and pretty much go down the route of what they did with Miles's Cressida, cheap nasty power.

I dropped the car off to my younger brother today who's pulling out the 7M while he's off work. The loose plan is a very quick car for sub 10K. It came with some stuff I plan to sell to bring the OG purchase price down a bit.

It's already a hoot to drive, and has received lots of comments at the lights, so watch this space....

Another cressy of death, I like it.

Very cool, I like it alot!!! looking forward to following the build

5th October 2011, 08:11 PM
Hells yeah son, should go awesome. Come and raid my place for some parts.

5th October 2011, 08:22 PM
you paid less for the whole car than the r154 is worth!!!!!!! massive score.

5th October 2011, 08:30 PM
I love sleepers like this, can't wait for the finished project and hopefully some vids of 2j goodness :tu

5th October 2011, 09:25 PM
Nice fwd offset on the wheels joshy...

Keen to see how the ol girl goes

5th October 2011, 09:32 PM
I'll even out the ride height an prob use the standard wheels.

First purchase we made was a 2J single manifold with T4 flange the other day.

Funnily, anyone who knows bout 7M's, in the 1,000K's I drove it, it did the head gasket, lol. The head had only been redone a few months ago, with cometic, arp's and bigger Hks cams, and it still shit itself

6th October 2011, 12:35 AM
LOL @ p00 motor!

Nice car Josh. 2J + MX73 (JZX73) + stockers = sleeper WIN!!

Lots of love for 60s/70s/80s Toyotas!

6th October 2011, 11:25 AM
you scored ....

6th October 2011, 11:50 AM
Here's a pic of the manifold we went with, planning to use a Tial external gate with it.

6th October 2011, 11:54 AM
I'll be getting rid of the big tacho, boost gauge, TRD badge etc... Using the stock rims, and prob a fake pea shooter.

It has a Dell style sticker on the side, 7MGTE Inside, which I'll prob leave to troll other Toyota owners :D

The guy I got it from pleaded for the 2 bobble head dolls to stay, and it also has a granpa hat on the rear parcel.

Cool cars, heaps of charm and charachter.

Thanks, Josh.

King Ding a Ling has arrived, Fank yoo Mr Al : )

Al reckons a GT3788 will be the go with manual.

T4 open flange makes it hard on turbo choice, don't think any GT's have open housings. Ebay T66 FTW.

Did you like the instructions on the water neck for the thermo switch?

Hmm, maybe the beer fueled arvo we got the manifold could have gone better. I had a chat to Will at quickspool, he can look after me a little, we'll go down that path.

Were not quite sure, is that the part number for the sensor ?

Weird, I know that they lift heads and blow gaskets and the supposed remedy is good studs.
Either way you have a 7M with a dud big end, oil leaks, and hks cams. Ill give you $20 for it and ill come get it or are you tearing it down. Lol but seriously are you keeping it.?

8th February 2012, 11:03 AM
I've read it's the torque specs were wrong from the factory, with studs and hks metal gasket and right specs they should be good ?

Hmm, were not really sure matey, it's still in the car which is in the back of micks place, don't wanna pull it till the last second, so we don't have to push it in and out everyday.

8th February 2012, 01:03 PM
good point, well if you want to part ways with it shoot me a pm. brother has a hilux ute it would go nice in.

9th February 2012, 08:07 AM
TFS106 is the part number for the tridon thermo switch that fits in the water neck and controls the already fitted relay.

Rally this weekend, doubt any work will have been done :)

19th February 2012, 12:53 PM
2jz powered rally car.......i like it lol.

11th April 2012, 09:06 AM
So the plot thickens a little.... Some brainstorming help required.....

I got this badboy for $300, big end rrrrooted.

It's nice and straight, good paint and interior. I'm not quite sure what I want to do now, the X8 is an easier car to get cool parts for, but the X7 I think is a cooler car from the get go, hmmmm...

Any Zook fans ? That's my daily drive Sierra in the background, roughest car in ACT gaurenteed ! Getting G13B in next few weeks.

Thanks Josh.

Ah that was you!! i tried to convince old mate to sell it out from under you

found one for twice the price yesterday, although its grande so its pimpn!

the 7 series is 'cooler' but agree the 8 is easier to get shiz for

Guessing that's where that black chaser half cut is going then?

Haha, crack up, cough it up Marty, what are you up too ?

The guy was a real piece of work, so I made quite clear I'd be returning for my deposit should he do that.

I originally thought to get it just to do a 5 stud hub conversion to the X7, but I'm having trouble finding the relevant info on the net, guys on the Cressy forum haven't been much chop so far.

I can get another 7mgte decent block of another mechanic across the road, pull one of my heads off and redo the HG, install in the X8 initially NA, then later swap across all the turbo gear from the X7. Or I could just send it to Al with a 1JZ....

I guess a decent gearbag in the X8 would be my limiting factor.

11th April 2012, 05:29 PM
i haven't investigated much of the 7m thats in ours, you're welcome to first dibs on it if you like, cause we definitely won't be using it.

we take for granted that theres lots of people on this forum that know stuff, theres a LOT of attitude out there with others where they figure it out for themselves and don't share, but still happily ask others for help when they need it! run into that lot.

the stock manuals are supposed to be pretty good, whatever comes behind the 1jz from Japan, also fetch decent money according to benneh

14th April 2012, 11:22 AM
I could be quite interested in your 7M actually Marty, thanks mate.

I do appreciate the level of help I recieved when first joining this forum, we all start somewhere.

So are you doing a 1JZ build on your Grande, and going manual ?

It's a no go for rear hub swap, so prob gonna make the X8 into a solid cheap daily.

14th April 2012, 07:08 PM
probably stay auto just cause thats what the cut came with, cruiser styles

28th May 2012, 10:19 AM
So I've slowly started to make some progress, I've only ever pulled out EJ engines, so it's a little different this beast.

Pissed the brown MX83 of to my younger brother, he's planning a 1UZ convo.

9th June 2012, 02:24 PM
Small update info, it's starting to get close

I now have a TO4-R Turbo, .96 rear, AR70 front, another manifold and cheap HKS copy gate.

Ordered engine mounts from Xcessive engineering in the US, and made decision on clutch/NPC job. Had a bit of a win, and was given front and rear R33 GT-R calipers, rotors and comp pads to try adapt.

PWR FMIC coming next week, and sent my radiator of for a reco.

Bit of an update...

Turbo turned out to be a bit of a debacle, the Vband rear housing was old school and aparantly from the dawn of time, nobody local could help us out, so thats been sent of to Al to get sorted. The wastegate was missing a few bits and pieces, so I manned up and got a Turbosmart Progate 50mm.

Another shitbagger setback was the gearbox actually turned out to be a W58, rather then a R154, so that was pretty gay. It's still a steel case Supra 5spd, but from my understanding issued to the NA 2JZ JZA80 Supra. Mixed reports of what it will and wont handle, so I'm just going to run Redline shockproof, plenty of mech sympathy and see how it goes.
The clutch setup turned out to be a bit of a headfuck, I ended up with a custom lightened flywheel, and a fairly aggresive, but sprung centre Xtreme clutch, and had to get another bellhousing, just to get the fork, bearing and clip.

Radiator is back, planning to run Subaru thermos, and got the PWR fmic all painted matt black. I've got 3/4 of the big sound system (work next door to car audio shop) and I think that's about where it's at for now.

I dropped the engine in Monday night, turbo is just a mockup, spare 35R we have.

11th July 2012, 09:05 PM
Awesome stuff guys keep it up

17th July 2012, 11:11 PM
Few more random pics along the way...

Vband housing squared away by Al :D

Xcessive Engineering mounts, the only company in the world to make these !

New mounts fouled one of the outlets for the oil return, also being originally for twin faggotry.

Funny story that outlet bit, took it to our local metal center to get welded over after we cut it down, and the shitcunt that works there said couldn't be done due to oil contamanation and metal porosity etc, quick drive down the road to our radiator guys and sorted in 5 mins, lol.

The birdsnest begins...

We decided that it's gonna be a real blokes car, and manhandled as such, so power steer delete it is...

I've never been much of a man for air con

fmic and rad with fresh coats

11th September 2012, 05:26 PM
Looking good mate any updates?

11th September 2012, 09:23 PM
It starts and runs, needs the dump section finished, and gate plumbed in, going to to get radiator running tomo, then pretty much just the front mount.
It'll need a few more lil finishing touches, but it's getting quite close. Sadly, it's going to go back to Micks old shop at home for a little bit while I save a bit more money for it.I got another turbo gen 1 for a daily, so just sorting that first.

Sounded cool with no turbo, like a blown chev.

10th February 2013, 07:28 PM
Diggin! Josh what's goin on with this thing now adays?

28th February 2013, 07:41 AM
Ain't done much for a while. Changing direction with turbo to an internal gated GTX3582R, for a bit more ease and simplicity.

Jus getting this Legacy to a level I'm happy with, seeing as it's the daily drive now, that and smashing 2nd gear in a 6spd 3 days before xmas threw a spanner in the works, hope to get back to the Cressy in bout 2 months.
